UCLA is getting some needed help at defensive back with the signing of cornerback John Humphrey from Pasadena’s John Muir High School. He was a three-star recruit in the 247Sports Composite, and a four-star in 247’s stand alone ranking. The Composite rankings have him as the 36th best defensive back recruit in the entire country.
Humphrey brings desirable height at 6-2, 176 pounds. He has been committed since the end of July after attending a UCLA camp in June.

He was the defensive back group MVP at the Opening Oakland regional camp. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.58 seconds and produced a 44.0 score on the power ball throw, which was the highest mark for any defensive back.
He has a rare combination of length and athleticism which made him a coveted prospect. His reaction time to the ball makes him stand out on the field. He had 11 offers, mostly from Pac 12 schools, and Oklahoma. A stated desire to stay close to home so his parents could easily watch him play narrowed the list to USC and UCLA. Oregon also stayed in the mix with an October official visit. UCLA defensive back coach Paul Rhoads headed up the recruiting efforts for Humphrey.
UCLA could have all or most of its defensive backs returning from the 2019 roster. Darnay Holmes is a redshirt junior, but is graduating. He has not announced his intentions for his last year of eligibility. Quentin Lake has completed three years at UCLA, but after missing much of 2019 with an injury, it would be difficult to imagine him moving on.
