Week Three Midweek Musings

Week Three Midweek Musings

This weekend got off to a good start with Friday night results worthy of a Friday the thirteenth with a full moon. Here are my week three Midweek Musings:

Week Three Midweek Musings

ACC

One ACC-related thing that stood out to me this weekend was that Wake Forest is 3-0. Their most recent victory came Friday night against a North Carolina team that has looked decent. Too bad the Demon Deacons play in the Atlantic Division with Clemson, because the Coastal looks pretty open so far. Tar Heels’ writer Scott Rose covered the game for us here.

However, there was far more bad news than good for the conference this weekend. BC did not look good in their loss to Les Miles and the Jayhawks on Friday. Kansas snapped a 48-game (!) losing streak on the road against Power Five opponents.

The calls for Willie Taggart’s job have started in Tallahassee. The Seminoles lost to Virginia and are now 1-2, their sole victory coming (by one point) against Louisiana-Monroe. To add insult to injury, linebacker Joshua Kaindoh is done for the season after a leg injury.

Oh, and Georgia Tech lost to The Citadel.

Maryland

Talk about your hot-and-cold teams. A week after hanging 63 on Syracuse, the Terps went 0/4 on fourth down and lost 20-17 to… Temple? This was Maryland’s fifth consecutive loss as a ranked team. They have a bye week to regroup, followed by a home game against #13 Penn State. It will be interesting to see which Terps show up for that game.

LSU

This game got off to a very shaky start for the Tigers. However, the result was ultimately what one expects when LSU faces an FCS team. One stat stood out to me from this game, one that makes it clear these are no longer the ground-and-pound Tigers: Joe Burrow has more red-zone TD passes (six, as of the first half of this game) in 2019 than he did all of last year (five).

Tennessee

Breathe easier, Vols fans, you won’t be going winless. This was as much of a statement win as you can have when you’re talking about an SEC team beating up on an FCS team. Now what can they do against Florida and their backup QB?

UCF

The Knights have picked right up where they left off. Their first two wins were against FCS and C-USA teams, respectively, but they handled Stanford easily, winning by 18 points. They face Pitt this weekend and Houston on November 2; every other game on their schedule will likely be a big win.

BYU

The Cougs have had a tough start to the season: three of their first four games come against opponents who were ranked as of last week. And yet, they’re 2-1. They have Washington coming to town this week in what could be a very interesting game.

Georgia

Not strictly football-related, but props to the Bulldogs for organizing a Pink-Out of the stadium as they faced Arkansas State. Red Wolves’ coach Blake Anderson lost his wife Wendy to breast cancer just a few weeks ago. ESPN wrote an excellent article on Blake and Wendy that you can read here.

Highlight of the Week

You may have seen this over the weekend on You Got Mossed! but I couldn’t resist using it as well. Oregon State’s Champ Flemings is 5’5″, but look what he does to this defender:

And that’s Midweek Musings for this week!
