Breaking Down the Villanova Win Against Rhode Island

The No. 14 Villanova Wildcats put up another great performance in a 35-0 shutout over the Rhode Island Rams. Sophomore quarterback Zach Bednarczyk was not used much, only attempting nine passes. The Villanova rushing attack led the way again this week, scoring three times and averaging over six yards per carry. The Richmond Spiders will certainly be looking to stop this offense that has scored over 30 points in their last four contests. Here is the LWOS analysis of the Villanova win.

Breaking Down the Villanova Win Against Rhode Island

Villanova Rushing Offense

The Wildcats used several backs to gain a total of 317 yards for the day. Four players had eight or more carries, but sophomore Aaron Forbes led the way. Forbes ran 10 times for 90 yards and a touchdown. Junior Javon White also had 10 carries but only gained 58 yards and a touchdown. If the Wildcats keep using all their backs, it will be very difficult for teams to stop the rushing attack.

Villanova Front Seven

While the Villanova defense only had one sack, they played exceptionally well against the rush. The Rams had 21 carries for a total of 28 yards all day. The Wildcats’ front seven also helped rush the Rhode Island quarterback, Jordan Vazzano. Vazzano only completed 14 of his 30 passes for 75 yards. This front seven is easily among the best in the FCS and will need to be if the Wildcats want to continue to dominate.

Zach Bednarczyk

Bednarczyk had another solid week despite not being utilized much. The sophomore quarterback completed eight of his nine passes for 133 yards and two touchdowns. In the rushing game, Bednarczyk ran the ball eight times for 59 yards. It appears that the Wildcats want to use a spread rushing attack to beat their opponents, and Bednarczyk will not need to air it out consistently.

Overall

Villanova has been playing fantastic as of lately. The offense has had four consecutive 30+ point games and the defense has only allowed over 21 points once this season. The Wildcats will now turn their attention to Richmond for next week. The Spiders are 6th in the FCS right now so it will be the first time Villanova is an underdog against an FCS opponent.
