John Bonamego Is Out As Central Michigan Head Coach. Following Friday’s 51-13 loss to the Toledo Rockets, the Central Michigan Chippewas have fired the head man after just four seasons.
2018 marked the worst season on record for the Chippewas as they finished 1-11 and 0-8 in the Mid-American Conference.
Bonamego played at Central Michigan as a quarterback and wide receiver graduating in 1987. He said that leading the Chippewas was his dream job upon his departure from Mount Pleasant, Michigan.
Once he graduated, he moved throughout the college ranks with stops at Maine, Lehigh, and Army as an assistant coach.
Next, he moved on to coach in the National Football League as a special teams coordinator for 16 years. He made stops in Jacksonville, Green Bay, New Orleans, and Detroit.
Bonamego leaves Central Michigan with a 22-29 record in four seasons with the Chippewas. He also brought the Chippewas to three straight bowl games and one MAC Championship game in his first season.
The Chippewas will have defensive backs coach Cory Hall step in to provide leadership to the program until a permanent head coach is named.
