2026 Orange Bowl: Saddle Up, Red Raiders, The Ducks Await In Miami

For the first time since 2012, the 2026 Orange Bowl will feature two teams playing in the game for the first time. Texas Tech and Oregon arrive in this college football quarterfinal matchup with new on-field identities. High-octane offenses have long defined both teams. However, this year, the defining trait has been dominant defense. The Red Raiders and Ducks have kept the scoreboard operator busy this season (both top 10 nationally in scoring). But their defenses have been the catalyst for their success. Which team has the edge to move on to the college football playoff semifinals?

Dynamic Ducks

In four seasons under Dan Lanning, Oregon has never won fewer than 10 games. Each year has built upon last year’s closing mark of the season. So does this mean Oregon can clear the quarterfinal hump they got derailed from last year? Their defense will be the stiffest test the Texas Tech offense has seen to date. Including the James Madison playoff game, Oregon still ranks seventh nationally in total defense (271.4 yards per game) and 10th in scoring defense (16.31 points per game). The defense is led by first-team All-Big 10 defensive back Dillon Thieneman. Despite a strong overall defensive season, it is noteworthy how the Ducks rank near the bottom nationally in havoc metrics. They finished the regular season with only 57 tackles for loss (113th in FBS) and 23 sacks (81st).
Oregon typically sets up the pass with the run. They are ranked 14th in rushing offense at 218.4 yards per game. However, that approach may be flipped against the Red Raiders. Quarterback Dante Moore’s first season as the full-time starter has been a success. He boasts a 28/8 touchdown-to-interception ratio and has delivered big plays all season. For 2025, Oregon averaged 12.5 yards per reception. The team’s top three wide receivers all averaged 15+ yards per grab. Moore could be asked to do more through the air early, using the passing game to loosen the Red Raiders’ front. If Texas Tech has to scramble to cover the pass early, it could open opportunities on the ground. Over the last two seasons, Oregon is 25-0 when it runs for 100+ yards. But when they don’t, the Ducks are 0-2.

Rowdy Red Raiders

Luckily for the Red Raiders, they boast the number one defense against the rush. Utah finished the season ranked second nationally on the ground, averaging 270 yards per game. All Texas Tech did was limit them to 101 rushing yards in a 34-10 suffocating win. The Red Raiders were the only team in the nation to allow under 1,000 rushing yards and also the only team to allow under 900 rushing yards. Only Ohio State entered the quarterfinal round with fewer yards per play allowed than the Red Raiders, who were one of two teams to hold opponents under four yards per play. All four of the Red Raiders’ AP All-America selections came on the defensive side of the ball, including first-team honors for linebacker Jacob Rodriguez and EDGE David Bailey.
Much like Oregon, the Texas Tech offense hasn’t been coasting on the elite work of its defense. The Red Raiders sit just outside the top 20 in yards per play on offense, despite three different QBs forced into action. Quarterback Behren Mortonhas been dealing with a hairline fracture in his fibula since week one. Morton told reporters today that he feels around 80%, up from 70% he described during the Big 12 championship game. While the quarterback position has dealt with plenty of instability, the emergence of Cameron Dickey and J’Koby Williams in the run game has brought stability. Both possess home-run ability and could be the difference in the 2026 Orange Bowl.

2026 Orange Bowl Prediction

When Texas Tech took the field against BYU in the Big 12 championship, that was the biggest game in school history. They passed that test with flying colors. As long as this playoff run continues, each game will replace the previous as the biggest game for the Red Raiders. Outside of missing Skyler Gill-Howard, Texas Tech is the healthiest it has been since week one. No one the Red Raiders have faced this season has the speed, power, and elite skill talent that Oregon possesses.
The 2026 Orange Bowl will be tightly contested throughout. But Oregon has been slowed down three times this season (Penn State, Indiana, Iowa). The offense, while explosive, isn’t indefensible. The dynamic play-making ability of the Ducks can be contained as long as the rushing attack is bottled up. Texas Tech’s top-rated rush defense in the country shows up in Miami. Morton makes just enough clutch throws, and the ground game of the Red Raiders salts this game away in the fourth quarter.

Texas Tech 27, Oregon 20

About Andrew McCleary

A native Texan, Andrew was baptized early on in the waters of college football. But when he witnessed Vince Young scampering into the end zone to defeat the USC Trojans in 2006, it was from his seat in the Rose Bowl he knew nothing could compete. He is a former college baseball player, proud Texas Tech graduate, and Air Force veteran. Andrew and his wife live in Maryland with their 4 kids and black lab. When not covering the Big 12, he can be frequently found tending to BBQ on his smoker on the weekends.
