Welcome to the SEC Week 13 slate. 13 is the classic “unlucky” number that somehow always shows up when something big is about to happen. Something big will likely happen somewhere other than on the football field this weekend. FCS and G6 opponents litter the SEC slate. We have just one ranked-on-ranked matchup and an otherwise forgettable slate. The real news is what is coming out of Oxford, Mississippi.
Ole Miss doesn’t even play this week; they are on a bye. They currently sit at an 11-1 record, are No. 6 in the latest College Football Playoff ranking, and are primed to #PartyInTheSip with an opening round playoff game. But like the SEC Week 13 slate, all of the news in Oxford is coming off the field. Lane Kiffin is the object of everyone’s fancy in the 2025 carousel. After coming back to knock off Florida on Saturday night, the Kiffin gang made junkets to both Gainesville and Baton Rouge this week to see if there is more than what #TheSip is offering.
We at the SEC Betting Lines have long been fans of Kiffin. He has matured this season. The family is back together again in Oxford. Sure, he’s still a bit punchy on Twitter. But it’s cute and fun. Kiffin has turned Ole Miss from a perennial bottom-feeder into one of the top teams in the SEC. He has shown a great eye for talent and has leveraged the Transfer Portal to compensate for the Rebels’ deficiencies in high school recruiting. Also, unlike LSU and Florida, his two strongest suitors, he has a strong and coordinated NIL Collective financing the operation.
SEC Week 13 Betting Lines: Lane Train and Cupcakes
So Why Leave?
That is a damn good question. Lane is a God in Oxford. Sure, it is hard, but he seems to have found the formula. It’s not for lack of money; the Keith Carter seems committed to providing the funds to make Lane one of the highest-paid coaches. There is alignment at Ole Miss. We are not sure if the Louisiana Governor, I mean LSU, even knows what that word is or how to spell it. Florida is in a similar funk. They think they should be better, but it seems to be falling further and further behind Georgia.
Both Florida and LSU have plenty of talent in their backyards. Lane doesn’t have to go too far to get players. But he has shown the same at Ole Miss. Let’s face it, Lane loves the attention. Look at his Twitter, he knows the media narrative out there and is playing all in this game. If Lane leaves Oxford, it will suck. No doubt about it. It may hurt his “reformed” images, but let’s face it. This is Joey Freshwater. He ducked out of Tennessee right after his first season. He was fired by Nick Saban before the national championship for not being able to balance his duties as offensive coordinator and future head coach. Lane is wild and unpredictable. That’s why none of us know what he is doing, but we hope he’ll continue to bring the party to #TheSip.

Last Week’s Picks
Not too shabby. Can anyone feel confident about Texas A&M heading into the Playoff? They could roll a team or have trouble stopping a fly. LSU escaped a nailbiter, as Arkansas found another way to lose a game close this season. Alabama’s playoff hopes rest on winning at Jordan-Hare Stadium at night. What could go wrong? Georgia is playing as well as anyone in the country and looks primed to make a deep playoff run. We’ve said enough about Ole Miss and Lane…
No. 22 Missouri @ No. 8 Oklahoma
Oklahoma seems to be a lock to make it to the CFB Playoff. Beat Mizzou and LSU next week, and they are in. Mizzou is the team that will pose the biggest challenge. The Tigers’ biggest offensive strength, running the damn ball, is OU’s biggest strength on defense. Add to that being at home, and the Sooners are going to get ready to host a first-round matchup while the Horns get ready for some meaningless bowl game.
Pick: Oklahoma
Kentucky @ No. 14 Vanderbilt
Looking for an upset this weekend? Check out this one in Nashville. Kentucky and Mark Stoops have found new life in a high-powered offense and stout defense. These new fad finds will likely be the key to Mark Stoops continuing to have faithful employment in Lexington. I feel like it’s almost midnight for the SEC’s Cinderella.
Pick: Kentucky
Arkansas @ No. 17 Texas
Close, but no cigar. Bobby Petrino has not found the secret recipe for his staff since taking over Sam Pittman. The Razorbacks continue to battle but seem to enjoy finding new ways to lose each week. Texas is looking to pick itself off the mat and see if a 10-2 team from Austin can sneak in.
Pick: Texas
No. 20 Tennessee @ Florida
Will the real Tennessee stand up? What do we make of the Vols. They have a nice offense when they don’t turn the ball over and can put up points in a hurry. The real question is what can the Vols do at night in Gainesville? Florida is a hot mess and doesn’t seem to know what is going on for lunch or the latest on their coaching preview. This one has bad luck all over it for the Vols. Goodnight, sweet princess.
Pick: Florida
