Current SEC Head Coaching Candidates:
- Lane Kiffin: Kiffin is the prettiest girl at the ball. Everyone seems to want to dance with him, from Gainesville to Baton Rouge. Kiffin no doubt will get paid, but how much better is the job at Florida or LSU than what he has now in Oxford? NIL and the Transfer Portal have changed the calculus.
- Eli Drinkwitz: Drink continues to punch up at Mizzou. He had his third-string quarterback taking Vandy to the end last weekend in Nashville. He wouldn’t have the sex appeal of Kiffin, but the chip he has on his shoulder would be interesting in Gainesville, or he could join his former defensive coordinator in Baton Rouge. The best spot, though, is Auburn. He would love to be the thorn in Kalen DeBoer and the Tide’s side.
- Josh Heupel: Here is your wild card. Heupel has done nothing but win since his arrival at UCF, and he led Tennessee to the CFB Playoffs this year. He has an exciting offensive style and would be an interesting coup at either Florida or LSU.
Current Openings:
- Arkansas: Rhett Lahshee is the name on everyone’s list in Fayetteville. Lashee has done well at SMU and has plenty of dollars to compete in the ACC. Is it worth making the jump to Arkansas, where the lift will be heavier? Nope. Let’s go for GJ Kinne from Texas State. Texas State, you say? Yep. Kinne has demonstrated an ability to transform the Bobcat roster and has deep ties to Texas, keeping a close eye on an Arkansas resurgence. He also has an exciting offense.
- Florida: Sorry, Gators. Lane isn’t coming. The Gators will strike big with a big offensive name and against an in-state rival. Miami Hurricane offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson is the pick. Dawson is a QB whisperer and has explosive offenses. That is the playbook to make the Gators tick.
- LSU: All eyes are on Lane again. But questions about the governor’s meddling raise concerns about stability. Let’s pretend for a minute that cooler heads prevail. LSU is in a position to compete on the big stage, so why not go and get the SEC’s version of Curt Cignetti? LSU goes and hires former Tulane and current Houston coach Willie Fritz. A little bit older, but this guy knows ball and how to win. This is the smart hire; let’s hope someone can get Landry on the phone.
Potential openings:
- Auburn: Hugh Freeze has been a tremendous disappointment on The Plains. The Tigers move on and hire Eli Drinkwitz, who understands how to utilize the transfer portal to find a quarterback and leverage NIL to win in the SEC.
- Kentucky: Mark Stoops did well in Lexington, but it seems his formula has spoiled now. Fran Brown has stubbed his toe in Year 2 in Syracuse. That has more to do with injuries than beginner’s luck. Brown has an edge and could give Kentucky the edge it is lacking.
- South Carolina: Will Shane Beamer reset his clock and return home to Virginia Tech, or will the Gamecocks grow tired of the inconsistency of their coach? If they make a move, they go after Jamey Chadwell from Liberty. Chadwell runs a version of the option and has shown an ability to make connections in the Palmetto State.

No. 9 Vanderbilt vs. No. 20 Texas
No respect. The No. 9 Commodores find themselves an underdog as they head to Austin to face the Longhorns. Arch is likely out with a concussion. Let’s see if that Texas defense can find the stops to give Matthew Caldwell time to lead Texas to the win.
Pick: Texas
No. 5 Georgia vs. Florida
Grab a cocktail and your jorts, Georgia vs. Florida is headed back to Jacksonville. Billy Napier is gone for the Gators. They will have their hands full with a Georgia offense ranked #1 in efficiency.
Pick: Georgia
Mississippi State vs. Arkansas
Someone has to win Fayetteville this week. Mississippi State has been snakebit and finds itself winless in Jeff Lebby’s year and a half in Starkville. Arkansas continues to find itself close, but no cigar. Watch for this to be a high-scoring affair with the home team ending by flying the W.
Pick: Arkansas
South Carolina vs. No. 7 Ole Miss
Ole Miss took care of business last week in Norman. They know will close out November with the Gamecocks, the Citadel, and a trip to Starkville for the Egg Bowl. On paper, plans can be made for the College Football Playoff. Rebel fans will remember Kentucky and Florida last year. South Carolina is floundering this year, but looked sound on defense last week against the Tide. But what will they bring with them to Oxford at Night, where the Rebels have been deadly?
Pick: Ole Miss
No. 18 Oklahoma vs. No. 14 Tennessee
It feels like this one should have some more spice. The Vols have one of the most explosive offenses in the SEC and all of college football. Oklahoma’s defense has been exposed a bit in the last few games. John Mateer has not been healthy, and it has been evident in the Sooners’ running game and lack of offensive identity. This game will be a lot of fun and will keep Heupel and the Vols locked in for a CFB Playoff spot.
Pick: Tennessee
