2022 Week Two College Football Watch Guide

Saturday

11:00 AM

(1) Alabama at Texas

The marquis game of the weekend kicks off our 2022 week two college football watch guide as Alabama plays a rare September road game against Texas. The Crimson Tide looked the part in a 55-0 dismantling of last year’s double-digit winning Utah State last week. The defense was especially tough giving up only 136 total yards. For Texas, they got an easy 52-10 victory over Louisiana-Monroe last week. It was the much-anticpated debut of Quinn Ewers who went 16 for 24 with 225 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. This will be a big challenge for the young Longhorn offensive line and quarterback against the premier defense in college football.

South Carolina at (16) Arkansas

South Carolina had an uneven performance in week one against Georgia State. The positive is the won the game by 21 points. However, Spencer Rattler threw two interceptions and the Gamecock defense surrendered 200 yards on the ground to the Panthers. Now, they travel to Fayetteville to take on an Arkansas team that won a hard fought matchup over Cincinnati, 31-24. Conversely, the Razorbacks struggled a bit on pass defense as the Bearcats threw for 325 yards. This will be a matchup of strength against weakness for both teams and should be a highly entertaining matchup.

Missouri at Kansas State

Two old Big 12 foes face off in Manhattan as Kansas State hosts Missouri. Unfortunately, we didn’t learn much from either team as Missouri and Kansas State routed inferior opponents last week. Be that as it may, the Wildcats have a lot of expectations put on them this year in terms of a darkhorse Big 12 Championship. For Missouri, they are picked near the bottom of the SEC with most prognosticators have them fighting for bowl eligibility. How will this old Big 12 matchup unfold in the Little Apple?

UTSA at Army

Both teams come into week two reeling after tough losses in week one to Houston and Coastal Carolina respectively. It would be somewhat of an eye-opener to see either of these G5 powers starting 0-2 on the season. Normally, Army dominates the time of possession battle and is able to limit the times the opponent has the ball. However, that was not the case last week as Coastal Carolina held the ball for over 36 minutes to Army’s 24 minutes. For the Roadrunners, they must feel like they let one slip away after a 21-7 lead in the fourth quarter vanished into a 37-35 loss in overtime. Which one of these teams can exercise their demons to get a win?

2:30 PM

(24) Tennessee at (17) Pitt

This could end up the most intriguing game of the weekend. Tennessee barely broke a sweat in a 59-10 drubbing of Ball State on Thursday night. Meanwhile, Pitt snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in a classic Backyard Brawl. The Volunteers are trying to lay their claim to the best team in the SEC not named Georgia or Alabama. Meanwhile, Pitt is out to prove that 2021 was no fluke and they remain in the conversation for an ACC Championship. Which conference contender will remain perfect and get a huge win going into conference season?

3:00 PM

(25) Houston at Texas Tech

The Joey Maguire era in Lubbock got off to a tremendous start as the Red Raiders trounced Murray State, 63-10. Donovan Smith came off the bench to throw four touchdown passes in the game. Now, the competition steps up as Houston comes calling. The passing game matchup in this game will be intriguing to watch. Clayton Tune and the Cougars took three quarters to get started but they finished strong in the come from behind victory over UTSA. The ball will be flying all over the yard in West Texas in this exciting 2022 week two college football watch guide matchup.

Iowa State at Iowa

Iowa State is normally the team that struggles in an opening week game, but that honor belonged to the Hawkeyes in week one. In a game where the defense outscored the offense 4-3, the offense will need to be much improved with the Cyclones coming to town. Iowa State didn’t appear to miss a beat in their 42-10 victory over Southeast Missouri State. Hunter Dekkers threw for 293 yards and four touchdowns while Xavier Hutchinson had 128 yards receiving including three touchdowns of their own. The Cy-Hawk Trophy seems to be anyone’s ball game this year.

6:00 PM

(20) Kentucky at (12) Florida

Fresh off their upset of top 10 Utah, the Gators have vaulted up to #12 this week. However, they have another big test on their hands as Kentucky comes calling. Anthony Richardson has vaulted himself into a Heisman Trophy candidate after one week. Meanwhile, Kentucky dominated one of the best teams in the MAC with a 37-13 win over Miami, Ohio. Expect a low-scoring, defensive battle in a game that will almost assuredly be down to the wire.

6:30 PM

(10) USC at Stanford

Few teams made a statement like USC did in week one with a 66-14 domination of Rice. The defense contributed with three interceptions returned for touchdowns. As you would expect, the passing game was on point as Caleb Williams connected with Jordan Addison for a couple of scores. They face their first true road test as they travel to the farm to take on Stanford. The Cardinal soundly defeated Colgate 41-10 last week. Will the Cardinal have enough offensive firepower to spring the upset in week one?

Arizona State at (11) Oklahoma State

The PAC 12 travels to the Big 12 as Oklahoma State entertains Arizona State. The Cowboys got off to a strange start in a 58-44 win over Central Michigan in week one. Spencer Sanders threw for over 400 yards and four touchdowns. But, the Cowboy secondary was torched for 424 yards through the air. Arizona State was strong all around in a 40-3 win over Northern Arizona. This one has a chance to be closer than the 11-point spread would indicate.

9:15 PM

(9) Baylor at (21) BYU

It’s not the PAC 12, but it’s certainly a great matchup after dark. BYU might be the team to break up the college football world as the best non-power five team this year. That might especially be true with a top 10 upset over the Bears. The Cougars were dominant early and often in their 50-21 win over USF. The same can be said for Baylor who scored a 69-10 decision over FCS Albany. Blake Shapen and Jaren Hall will be a quarterback matchup worthy of staying up late.

10:00 PM

Mississippi State at Arizona

The most surprising team in week one might just have been the Arizona Wildcats. Coming in as a significant underdog, the Wildcats dominated San Diego State and won the game overall by 18 points. The defense was a big story in only allowing the Aztecs 62 yards through the air. They will need every bit of that pass defense against Will Rogers who threw for 450 yards and five touchdowns against Memphis last weekend. What a tremendous way to end the 2022 week two college football watch guide with this tremendous matchup.
