LSU Tigers 2022 Offense Spring Preview

The LSU Tigers 2022 offense is looking to revamp the program heading into the season. Under new leadership in Brian Kelly, the Tigers have many talented playmakers on the offensive side of the ball. The biggest question surrounding the team is the quarterback battle. Four stars will battle it out in the Spring and Fall to earn the starting nod. But as the Spring game nears on April 23, there are more position battles on offense to keep an eye on.

While the quarterback spot remains open, so do the running back and wide receiver positions. LSU has a ton of work to do following a 6-7 finish in 2021. However, the talent is there to compete once again in the SEC West division. Despite last season’s disappointment, the program is ecstatic to be back on the field. With the National L Club Spring game just over a week away, it’s time to take a look at key players on offense that could play a big role in the final scrimmage of the Spring.

Quarterback Battle

The Tigers have Myles Brennan, Garrett Nussmeier, and freshman Walker Howard in the mix. But there is also Arizona State transfer Jayden Daniels, who has been highly raved about since arriving in Baton Rouge. Many around the program believe Brennan returned to LSU for one reason: to win the starting job. After entering the transfer portal last season, Brennan might finally have a chance to play a full season. He missed nine games in 2020 due to an injury. Then in 2021, Max Johnson became the starter. Brennan has been taking first-team reps in practice and has looked solid.

As for Daniels, his decision to transfer to LSU has the fan base excited. He is a talented quarterback that put up solid numbers in three seasons at ASU. Last season, he passed for 2,380 yards with 10 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. While the touchdown to interception ratio needs to come down, Daniels has a significant chance to lead the program in the right direction. However, making the right decisions in the pocket on April 23 will give fans a better look at the transfer.

Nussmeier doesn’t have a lot of playing experience in the Purple and Gold. But, he was a highly sought-after recruit and could be a solid backup in 2022. Expect Nussmeier to play in the second half of the Spring game. If he can make accurate throws and quick decisions, he could work his way up the depth chart. Finally, Howard’s chances of seeing the field this season are slim. But Tigers fans will certainly see him in the Spring game.

Backfield Depth

LSU lost Tyrion Davis-Price to the upcoming NFL Draft. However, John Emery Jr. is back on the field following the academic issues that kept him out in 2021. Also at tailback, the program returns star Sophomore Armoni Goodwin. Both running backs have terrific field vision and can contribute to the offense. Tigers tailback Corey Kiner announced he is entering the transfer portal on Monday.

In the backfield, the Tigers have to establish a steady running game in 2022. That focus should begin with Saturday’s Spring Game. With the program bringing in a new scheme, running the ball consistently will be a key factor.

Wide Receiver Outlook

On the outside, LSU returns star receiver Kayshon Boutte. While he was injured in 2021, expect him to play a pivotal role in 2022 once again. The Tigers also bring back veteran Jaray Jenkins and Sophomore standout Jack Bech. While Bech is more of a hybrid receiver/tight end, he will see plenty of action in the slot this season.

Overall, the LSU Tigers’ 2022 offense production fate lies in the success of the unit. A few key positional battles are still up for grabs on this side of the ball. With the Spring game just days away, it will be interesting to see which players take a step forward in terms of earning valuable playing time this Fall in Baton Rouge.
