Football Friday Tailgate Recipes: Hot Toddies

Happy Football Friday.  Today we have Football Friday Tailgate Recipes: Hot Toddies. Did you save last week’s Toasty Tailgate Beverages? While working on the Toasty Tailgate Beverages article I came across several variations of hot toddies so I decided they needed their own week.  Again,  I tried to pick crockpot recipes so you have a large batch.

What is a hot toddy? A hot toddy, also known as hot whiskey in Ireland, is typically a mixed drink made of liquor and water with honey, herbs, and spices, and served hot. Hot toddy recipes vary and are traditionally drunk before retiring for the night, in wet or cold weather, or to relieve the symptoms of the cold and flu. We are going to use them this week to keep us warm at these late fall tailgate parties.  Y’all Enjoy!

Tequila Touchdown Toddy

A tasty twist on the classic hot toddy using Patrón’s Añejo which is aged for 12 months in a combination of French oak, Hungarian oak, and used American whiskey barrels.

This recipe makes 10 servings

Ingredients:

  • 20oz Patrón Añejo
  • 30 oz hot water
  • 15 oz lemon juice
  • 10 oz honey
  • 10 pinches of ground cinnamon
  • 30 drops of vanilla extract

Instructions:

In the bottom of a sturdy mug, combine a pinch of ground cinnamon, honey, and hot water and stir to combine.

Add Patrón Añejo, lemon juice, and vanilla extract.

Stir to combine all ingredients.

Apple-Cinnamon Hot Toddy

This recipe makes 12-15 drinks

Ingredients:

  • 8 oz. water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 4 cinnamon sticks, broken into pieces
  • 1-gallon fresh-pressed apple cider
  • 5 dashes of apple bitters (may substitute Angostura or your favorite cocktail bitters), plus more to taste
  • whiskey, brandy, or rum
  • lemon wedges studded with cloves

Instructions:

Two to four hours before the party starts, add all the ingredients except the whiskey, brandy, or rum to a slow cooker set to high. (You can also use a large pot on the stove over low heat instead; if so, start the process about an hour before the party.) Stir every 10 minutes for the first half-hour or so, until the sugar dissolves completely. Cover and let stand until hot. Turn the slow cooker to low to keep the mixture warm during the party.

Cranberry Hot Toddy

This recipe makes 12-14 drinks

Ingredients:

  • 2½ quarts cranberry juice cocktail
  • ⅓ cup honey
  • 3 tangerines, thinly sliced, plus more for serving
  • ¼ cup whole cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks, plus more for serving
  • 1-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled
  • 1¼ cups amber rum
  • 1 cup brandy
  • Fresh cranberries, for serving

Instructions:

1. In a large slow cooker, combine the cranberry juice, honey, tangerine slices, cloves, cinnamon sticks, and ginger.

2. Cover the slow cooker and set it on high. Cook for 4 hours. Stir in the rum and the brandy.

3. To serve, strain the drink into mugs. Garnish with tangerine slices, cranberries, and a cinnamon stick. Serve warm.
