The Future Washington Huskies

The Future Washington Huskies

With the departure of head coach Chris Petersen, fans may be unsure how the future of the Washington Huskies program will look. Doubts, however, were put to rest when the they announced their recruiting class for the 2020 college football season. With the 16th best recruiting class in the nation, here are your Husky recruits.

The Future Washington Huskies

Key recruits

The Washington Huskies inked several valuable recruits for the 2020 season, however three main players stand out.

The top recruit

Sav’ell Smalls :

The name Sav’ell Smalls will be a household name in Washington for years to come. The 6-4, 244 pound outside linebacker is an absolute force on the field. Smalls was a five star recruit on the 247Sports Composite. They ranked him as the 29th best recruit in the nation and third best WDE. Smalls possesses an elite skill set, and his football IQ is reportedly off the charts. His footwork and speed give him that extra edge to beat the offensive line. It will be exciting to see Smalls suit up for the purple and gold next season.

The Offensive Weapons

Jalen McMillan:

This High school star did not only tear up the football field, but he was also an excellent baseball player.. Nonetheless, football prevailed for this two-sport athlete and the Huskies benefit from that. The 6-2, 182 pound receiver should make an immediate impact for the Huskies offence. The 247Sports Composite was ranked the 67th best overall recruit and 12th best wideout in the 2020 class. McMillan figures to be an elite prospect for Washington. His hands and footwork separate him from defenders which creates an immense amount of  space to work his magic.

Ethan GarbersThe Garbers have an athletic household, Ethan is not the only Division 1 college football quarterback in his family. His brother Chase is the quarterback for the California Golden Bears. With knowing first hand the grind and determination it takes to be a successful NCAA quarterback, Ethan will be battling for the starting quarterback spot right away. He could be the sleeper in the quarterback battle this season. Garbers possesses a cannon of an arm, combined with the determination and drive to become a potential NFL quarterback.

With that being said, Washington has several other highly touted prospects that fan should look out for. The likes of Roger Rosengarten and Geirean Hatchett will give the Huskies protection on the O-line in the upcoming years. Safety Jacobe Covington turned down offers from Oklahoma and fellow Pac-12 rival Arizona State to play in Seattle. Tight-end Mark Redman and Rome Odunze both also possess great ball skills and size and should be impact players for the Washington Huskies.

Sleeper Recruit

There are several highly touted 4 and 5 star recruits who the Huskies snatched in their recruiting class. However there is a 3 star recruit by the name of Jay’Veon Sunday that has the potential to eventually become a solid running back for the Huskies.

Jay’veon Sunday:

Sunday stands a solid 5-11 and 196 pounds. He leads his high school program in all-time rushing yards and all time touchdowns. Sunday reads the blocking extremely well and breaks tackles with his solid frame. He possesses all necessary traits to become a good NCAA Division 1 running back.

Recruiting of 2021 Class

It is very early in the recruiting process for the 2021 college football season. Each year, tons of verbal commits back out of their scholarships to attend different programs. But again, until national signing day, nothing is set in stone. Washington does have one of the best recruits in the nation in quarterback Sam Huard who is currently committed to the Huskies.

This is no ordinary commit. First and foremost, he is the son of for UW quarterback Damon Huard, and nephew to Brock Huard. He is ranked number one pro-style quarterback in the nation and 9th best recruit in the 2021 class, according to 247Sports. If the Huskies can convince this 6-2 175 pound phenom to keep his word and sign his NLI on signing day, the Huskies will be one lucky team. With Ethan Garbers and Sam Huard as the  future quarterbacks for Washington, the Huskies can eventually be national contenders.

Summarize

To summarize, the Washington Huskies are looking like a very promising team for years to come. If all of these highly touted commits can band together and play as one, there is no reason the Huskies cannot  be the first team out of the Pac-12 to make the college football playoff since their last run in 2017. Signs are all pointing toward an excellent future of the Washington Huskies.
