Georgia Wins Allstate Sugar Bowl

Allstate Sugar Bowl

The Georgia Bulldogs defeated the Baylor Bears in the Allstate Sugar Bowl 26-14. Bulldogs leader Jake Fromm passed for 250 yards and two touchdowns. Despite being without numerous players, Georgia was able to hold the Bears in check. After losing to Texas last year, Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs got their revenge this time around. Fromm was 20/30 passing, which marks the first time in six games he’s passed for at least 50%. The win gives Georgia a 12-2 record. A loss for Baylor put them finishing the season at 11-3.

Fromm looked poised and confident in the pocket against Baylor’s defense. Passing for 250 yards and two scores helped the Bulldogs’ senior leader propel the offense to stay on schedule. Running back Zamir White led Georgia with 92 rushing yards and one touchdown. George Pickens was Fromm’s top target against Baylor. He hauled in 12 receptions for 175 yards and a touchdown.

Bulldogs Defense Holds Firm

Defensively, Georgia held Baylor to just 295 total yards. The Dawgs gave up just 61 rushing yards to the Bears. Smart and the Bulldogs have staked their claim back into the national spotlight. But, a crushing loss to South Carolina in October kept Georgia out of the College Football Playoff. The win gives Georgia their fourth win overall against Baylor. Three turnovers by the Bears helped the Bulldogs earn the win.

The way that Georgia’s defense held Baylor in check the entire game was a stellar performance. The three costly turnovers propelled the Bulldogs’ defense to play their best defensive game in quite some time. Georgia held Baylor’s top receiver, Denzel Mims, to just 75 receiving yards.

Baylor Troubles and Miscues

The Bears had a tough time moving the ball against the stingy Georgia defense. Only accounting for 14 points and 295 total yards is something Matt Rhule and the Bears have to improve on. Quarterback Charlie Brewer passed for just one touchdown and one interception to go along with 211 passing yards. Baylor’s inability to effectively drive down the field cost them points that could have made the score closer. Credit Rhule and the Bears offense though. They gave it all they had. In the end, Georgia proved to be too much to handle. Running back Trestan Ebner rushed for only 23 yards. Baylor only accounted for 61 total rushing yards. To win a monumental bowl game, it takes a lot more consistency. In the Allstate Sugar Bowl, the Bears just couldn’t get it done.

Allstate Sugar Bowl Final Thoughts

Georgia earned its 12th win of the season by defeating Baylor 26-14 in the Allstate Sugar Bowl. The victory gives the Bulldogs momentum heading into 2020. With the status of Rhule uncertain at this point, a win could have given the Bears their best bowl win in a while. Give credit to Rhule though. The turnaround he has made in Waco has been interesting to see. After a few abysmal finishes, the Baylor football program is back in the spotlight. Despite losing twice to Oklahoma, the Bears still made a New Year’s Six bowl game. Matching up against Georgia proved to be too much in the end.
