Penn State adds veteran receiver to a young group with the addition of Florida State graduate transfer George Campbell. The former five-star wide receiver posted on his Instagram page Wednesday that he is making the trip north to finish out his eligibility. Being a graduate transfer, Campbell will be eligible immediately for the upcoming season.

The Nittany Lions capitalized off of the controversial transfer portal this week. Penn State added graduate transfer Campbell to the squad. After having its own share of receivers leave this off season, the addition of Campbell is arguably a good thing. Earlier this winter I did a rundown of the receivers left on the roster and only two had real game experience. Standout KJ Hamler and rising sophomore Jahan Dotson are the only two left after the departure of Juwan Johnson and Brandon Polk in the off season to play substantial time for the Nittany Lions in the 2018 season. So, who is George Campbell and what can fans expect from him?

Who is George Campbell?

When he arrives on campus in Happy Valley, Campbell will be the oldest receiver on the team. This is something that new wide receivers coach Gerad Parker can use to his advantage. Although, even though Campbell has the most experience, being the veteran, he has not played all that much over his college career. Campbell was a part of the 2015 recruiting class. He is from Tarpon Springs, FL and was once the No. 3 receiver according to 247Sports. He was also the No. 19 overall player.

Despite being highly recruited out of high school Campbell was not able to translate his talent onto the field while at Florida State. A core injury followed Campbell throughout his time with the Seminoles. He red shirted the 2016 season after having surgery to repair the core/hip injury. He ended 2017 early with the same injury. After entering the transfer portal on January 16 of this year, Noles247 stated that he was healthy at this time.

Injury was the headline for Campbell at Florida State, the redshirt junior recorded only 13 catches for 206 yards and no touchdowns in his three seasons. That does not negate the player that Campbell has the potential to be though. He is 6-foot-4 and 202 pounds. Further, after his freshman season he was named newcomer of the year on special teams. His injury in addition to a struggling Seminoles offense over the last few season was not a recipe for success. Overall, if Campbell can stay healthy look for him to make an impact in the Penn State offense this fall.
