Chomped! Florida Gators Upset LSU Tigers 27-19

Florida Gators Upset LSU Tigers

Florida has done it again. Dan Mullen and the Florida Gators upset the #5 LSU Tigers 27-19 in the Swamp. It was an extremely physical game that was won in the running game and trenches. Florida’s defensive coordinator Todd Grantham called a great game against the Tigers and ruined their chances of a perfect season. Junior Vosean Joseph and Jachai Polite had big games against the LSU offense. The Florida rushing attack played well against an exceptional LSU defense and Florida made the big plays when they needed to.

LSU Tigers

The LSU Tigers will no longer be the fifth ranked team in the country as they lose to the Gators in a grudge match. Ohio State graduate transfer quarterback Joe Burrow had his worst game of his collegiate career. He completed 19 out of 34 passes for 191 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions. Those picks came late in the game and were also his first two interceptions on the season. Senior running Nick Brossette had a decent game as he had 15 carries for 95 yards and two touchdowns. Seventy-five percent of those yards came in one drive in which he led the Tigers to their final touchdown. Justin Jefferson was the lead receiver for the Tigers. He had three catches for 50 yards. LSU’s offensive line had a rough night as they allowed five sacks by the Florida Gators.

On defense, the Tigers were pretty solid against the pass but led Florida run the ball on them. Freshman linebacker Micah Baskerville led the Tigers in tackles with eleven and a half of a tackle for loss. Safety Grant Delpit had a good game as he had ten tackles and an interception. Linebacker Devin White had nine tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. The LSU defense didn’t do a great job of getting in Florida’s backfield. They had zero sacks an only two tackles for loss. They did have nine QB hurries and three of them came from Michael Divinity Jr.

Florida Gators

Feleipe Franks completed 12 out of 27 passes for 161 yards, one touchdown and an interception. Franks wasn’t at his best but he took what the LSU defense gave him for the most part. Junior running back Lamical Perine had a great game with 17 carries for 85 yards and two touchdowns. Jordan Scarlett had fourteen carries for 65 yards and was clutch late in the game. The Gators had 215 rushing yards against the LSU defense. Josh Hammond led Florida in receiving with three receptions for 85 yards. Tight end Moral Stephens had two catches for eleven yards and a touchdown. JUCO transfer Lucas Krull got involved as he completed a 15 yard reception to Franks to set up Perine’s second touchdown.

The Florida defense came out to play. They did a great job of forcing turnovers and getting to the quarterback. Joseph had a career night with 14 tackles and two sacks. Chauncey Gardner-Johnson and David Reese each had 11 tackles. Jachai Polite continues to have a big season. He had six tackles and two sacks on the night. Jabari Zuniga also recorded another sack for the Florida Gators. Louisiana native Brad Steward put the game on ice with a 25-yard pick six. Donovan Stiner had another big play as he picked off Burrow with just seconds left in the game on fourth and long.

What’s next?

The Florida Gators will be back on the road this Saturday to take on an SEC East opponent. The Vanderbilt Commodores will host the Gators for their next game. Florida defeated Vanderbilt last season 38-24 at the Swamp. You can watch this game Saturday afternoon at 12pm EST on ESPN.
