LSU Spring Game: White Defeats Purple 28-27
The LSU 2018 Spring Game was a significant sign of what is to come in Baton Rouge. With many unanswered questions heading into the season, Ed Orgeron’s team looked poised overall as a program. Throughout the game, there were plenty of positives, but also some negatives. Quarterback has been the talk of the town in Baton Rouge this off-season. Myles Brennan is expected to be the starter in 2018. However, Lowell Narcisse and Justin McMillan are making a case for the starting spot.
Year Three of Orgeron
Orgeron’s second full season as head coach at LSU could wind up being costly. Projected to finish 6-6, the Tigers have a lot of work to improve on. Especially on the offensive side. The offensive line is young, and that could be a cause for concern. For the quarterbacks, the competition will be open until the first game in September. On Saturday, Brennan finished 11-of-23 for 113 yards. Narcisse was 6-of-13 for 205 yards and McMillan finished 14-of-29 for 216 yards. Out of the three, McMillan proved his case for the starting role. But it is still spring, and a long way to go until a starter is named in Death Valley.
Stars Shine in Spring Showcase
In the backfield, Clyde Edwards-Helaire lit it up rushing the ball. The star finished with 74 yards on 14 carries and two touchdowns. The backfield will not prove to be the issue in Baton Rouge this season. Projected starter Nick Brossette had a solid day as well. The Tigers are loaded with depth at the running back position once again in 2018
Defensively, the Tigers are loaded yet again. Dave Aranda’s squad looked excited to get on the field and actually play contact defense. However, star safety Grant Delpit did suffer an injury in the first half that will sideline him for a while. Otherwise, defensive leader Devin White and the Tigers are ready to be an elite defense in 2018.
The LSU spring game brought forth a sign of what type of scheme the Tigers will run this season. With all of the hype around the quarterback position, a few wide receivers stole the show on Saturday. Texas Tech transfer Jonathan Giles had a solid day. Drake Davis and Jacory Washington also put in solid work. Freshman Terrace Marshall showed flashes of what is to come from his game in the future as well.
Steve Ensminger gave the fans a small showcase of what to expect in 2018. With a lot of uncertainty surrounding the offense, it will be up to Ensminger to right the ship before all else fails. The fan base is behind him, surely, and can’t wait to see what this team can do this season. Could a run at a National Championship be hanging in the balance for Orgeron and LSU? Only time will tell. As we get closer to the season, the position battles will intensify and the fans will get a better vibe as to who to watch for. The 2018 college football season is quickly approaching, and Tiger fans are excited for what is to come.
