Big 12 Teams Still Alive in the College Football Playoff Race

This has been a tremendously disappointing season for the Big 12 so far. Preseason contenders like the TCU Horned Frogs, Baylor Bears, and Texas Longhorns, have all been eliminated from the College Football Playoff. And we’re only in week 11. At this point, it’s hard to see any team from this conference in the playoff. There are really only three teams left from the Big 12 still in the playoff picture. The Oklahoma Sooners, West Virginia Mountaineers, and Oklahoma State Cowboys, are all still alive in the playoff race. However, OU and OSU both have two losses and would need a lot of chaos for them to have any legitimate chance. Now, let’s take a look at the Big 12 teams still alive in the College Football Playoff race.

Big 12 Teams Still Alive in the College Football Playoff Race

Oklahoma Sooners

The Sooners currently have a record of 7-2 (6-0 Big 12), and have won six games in a row. However, they have yet to face three of the best four teams in the conference. They face the 25th ranked, in the AP Poll, Baylor Bears on Saturday. Games against West Virginia and Oklahoma State will round out the Sooners’ season. They have relied on the three-headed monster of Baker Mayfield, Joe Mixon, and Dede Westbrook on offense. The front seven has been up and down on defense. However, the secondary has been the biggest weakness for the Sooners. Yet, the Sooners are still the favorite to walk away with the conference, and also have the best chance to make the playoff. They’re currently number 11 in the playoff rankings.

Oklahoma State Cowboys

The Cowboys currently have a record of 7-2 (5-1 Big 12), and have won five games in a row. They have the opportunity to make that number six this weekend against the Texas Tech Red Raiders. OSU’s best victory came against the tenth ranked Mountaineers two weeks ago. A 43-37 victory over the Kansas State Wildcats, on the road, jumped the Cowboys to number 13 in the College Football Playoff rankings. The rankings committee does recognize the Cowboys loss to Central Michigan, which should have never happened, as something that should not hurt them too much. OSU will need to win out, including a big game against Oklahoma, to have any chance to make the playoff.

West Virginia Mountaineers

West Virginia is a team that is flying under the radar nationally right now. There are currently nine two-loss teams sitting ahead of the Mountaineers in the playoff rankings. Considering West Virginia’s only loss is to Oklahoma State on the road, they could be ranked a lot higher. It would not be out of the question for West Virginia to still make the playoff as a one-loss power five conference champion. The Mountaineers are underdogs for their road game against Texas on Saturday. And, if they can beat Oklahoma next week, then they would most likely crack the top ten again. Yet, West Virginia, like OSU and OU, faces an uphill battle on the road to the College Football Playoff.
