Army Drops First Loss at Home to North Texas

(West Point, NY) The Army West Point Black Knights are rolling on teams that hasn’t been seen in quite a while. Army has all the making to be the first bowl eligible team since the 2010 team. The team is ranked highly nationally in multiple categories. Such as ranking in top five in the country in rushing, yards allowed per game and points allowed per game. These categories are no small, disregarded statistical fields. This dominance came out last week in Army’s homecoming game against Lafayette. The game was extremely lopsided as the Black Nights manhandled the Leopards 62-7. Granted Lafayette only has one win, confidence was being built. Though this easy win would not last long as they had a strong test ahead. This time, North Texas came to West Point.

Army Drops First Loss at Home to North Texas

North Texas comes into the game at 3-3. After going 2-3 to start the season, a change at the quarterback position occurred. True freshman Mason Fine took the helm of the offense and led the Mean Green to a win in his first ever start. This week, he would have to go against a strong, nationally ranked Army defense.

Keeping It Close

The beginning of the first half for both teams was sloppy. Andy Davidson fumbled the ball on Army’s first drive. On the ensuing drive for North Texas, Mason Fine’s pass was intercepted. With 7:38 on the clock, Army’s Darnell Woolfork ran in a 9 yard TD run to give Army the 7-0 lead. However, exactly two minutes later, Mason Fine’s 34 YD pass connected to Terien Goree to knot the game up at 7-7. North Texas was not done in the first quarter however. Ahmad Bradshaw’s pass was picked off and taken to the house by Eric Jenkins. North Texas would lead 14-7. In the second quarter, Blake Wilson nailed a 39 yd field goal to pull the score to 14-10 to end the half.

Blowing the Game Open

North Texas would come out the gates swinging in the second half. With 13:28 in the beginning of the third quarter, Jeffrey Wilson charged in a 41 yd TD run to extend their lead to 21-10. With 7:33 left in the third quarter, Jeffrey Wilson would pound in his second TD of the quarter to push the lead further apart to 28-10. Army had a glimmer of hope shine through however with 1:14 left to play in the third quarter. Ahmad Bradshaw ran in a six yard TD as well as a two point conversion to make the game 28-18. With 5:58 left in the fourth quarter, Jeffrey Wilson ran in his third TD of the game to make the score 35-18. And that’s the way the game would end. The loss drops Army to 4-3 on the season.

Next week, Army travels to Winston Salem, NC to face the 5-2 Wake Forest Demon Deacons.
