French Open Day 2 Women’s Predictions
Carole Monnet vs Katie Boulter
Jordan:
Clay is Boulter’s worst surface by far, and she would probably lose to most players in the draw. However, this is one of the matchups I expect her to come through. Monnet did well to progress through qualifying, but she has never won a Grand Slam main draw match.
Prediction: Boulter in 3
Nurein:
Boulter has been having some problems this year with poor results on hard courts. Clay is not her best surface, but Carole Monnet doesn’t have the firepower to hit through the Briton. With the British No. 1 status on the line, expect Boulter to get off to a good start.
Prediction: Boulter in 2
Andreas:
Monnet is a new name to watch, as she’s in a Grand Slam main draw for the second time in her career after qualifying. Boulter is in good form, coming off a WTA 125K title in Paris earlier in May. The Brit has strong power and should be able to hit through Monnet. The Frenchwoman may be able to secure a set with her match play, along with the crowd surely being on her side.
Prediction: Boulter in 3
Taylor Townsend vs Elisabetta Cocciaretto
Jordan:
Townsend is in the main draw as a lucky loser. Predicting what level the inconsistent American will bring to the court is always challenging. Cocciaretto has not had the best season, but I favor her slightly more on clay.
Prediction: Cocciaretto in 3
Nurein:
Cocciaretto is tough to beat on this surface, but Townsend should look to open up the court with that punchy lefty serve. The American’s net skills could also prove valuable. I’m looking at a three-setter here and a slight edge to Townsend.
Prediction: Townsend in 3
Andreas:
Townsend is a dangerous lucky loser in this draw, though the American has faced injury concerns during much of the spring. Cocciaretto is 4-11 during the 2025 season, but made the fourth round of this tournament last year. There could be pressure on the Italian’s shoulders with ranking points on the line, but having more matchplay under her belt might be what gets her into the next round.
Prediction: Cocciaretto in 3
Tamara Korpatsch vs Yulia Starodubtseva
Jordan:
Koroatsch’s awkward style of play is capable of causing Stardoubtseva issues. But the Ukrainian possesses much more firepower and her ceiling is higher than Korpatsch’s. That makes her the favorite to progress.
Prediction: Starodubtseva in 2
Nurein:
Korpatsch is coming off one of the best qualifying runs in the tournament which included a straight sets win over Rebeka Masarova. Starodubtseva is steadily rising but maybe the German can lean onto her experience if the match gets tight.
Prediction: Korpatsch in 3
Andreas:
Starodubtseva is another lucky loser in the draw this week, and has had some solid results on clay, namely a fourth-round appearance in Madrid. Korpatsch qualified, so both players will already have three matches in preparation for this, but she hasn’t played as many matches on clay due to injury. This is another toss-up match, but Starodubtseva has some momentum that could give her the edge.
Prediction: Starodubtseva in 3
Iga Swiatek vs Rebecca Sramkova
Jordan:
Swiatek’s lack of form has been well-documented, but she is not in any danger here. Sramkova is not fully comfortable on clay and does not possess the game to cause a shock. The four-time champion to win easily.
Prediction: Swiatek in 2
Nurein:
Swiatek has beaten Sramkova on a hard court before, a surface where the Slovak might have been more at home to secure an upset. On clay, Swiatek should be winning at a canter. She is still a formidable player despite her recent slump.
Prediction: Swiatek in 2
Andreas:
Swiatek enters the 2025 French Open with more questions and uncertainty as she’d like, with the Pole failing to reach a WTA final on clay–or any other surface–since her French Open triumph last year. Sramkova is one of the higher ranked unseeded players in the draw, but she’s still searching for a first Top 10 win. She also thrives on hard courts compared to clay courts, and the Pole should feel confident being on her preferred surface.
Prediction: Swiatek in 2
