French Open Day 2 Women’s Predictions

Emma Navarro vs Jessica Bouzas Maneiro

Jordan:
Navarro has struggled to live up to her amazing 2024 in the opening months of the season. However, she is still consistently winning opening round matches. Bouzas Maneiro likes playing on clay, but she is unlikely to have enough to upset Navarro.
Prediction: Navarro in 2

Nurein:
This is such a tough draw for Navarro. Bouzas Maneiro owns a Top 10 win in the first round of a Grand Slam. I don’t expect the Spaniard to go down easily in this one, so Navarro might have to be picture-perfect to avoid a total shock.
Prediction: Navarro in 3

Andreas:
Last year’s French Open was Navarro’s first appearance in the second week of a Grand Slam, and there may be pressure for the American to duplicate that. Bouzas Maneiro is consistent and gritty from the baseline, boasting an 8-5 record on clay courts this year. Navarro will have to serve well and jump out to an early advantage. Expect a close two-setter.
Prediction: Navarro in 2

Leolia Jeanjean vs Irina-Camelia Begu

Jordan:
On paper, this is a great draw for both women. Home advantage will give Jeanjean some help and she can play well on clay. Overall, I think Begu’s game is more suited to clay and she can get through this contest.
Prediction: Begu in 3

Nurein:
Begu was a having disastrous clay swing until she went to Parma over a week ago in search of wins. She got a trio just to get herself into rhythm. That may not be sufficient if Jeanjean is able to get the crowd into the action. The Frenchwoman might prevail should Begu underestimate the power one of the noisiest group of fans.
Prediction: Jeanjean in 3

Andreas:
Jeanjean was swiftly knocked out of the 2024 French Open by Iga Swiatek in the first round, but this matchup should provide the Frenchwoman a better chance to win. This is also a rematch from when they played in the third round of the 2022 French Open. Begu is a former quarterfinalist here, and should use her strong forehand to get the win–though Jeanjean thrives on home soil and could use her confidence to get the upset.
Prediction: Begu in 3

Emma Raducanu vs Xinyu Wang

Jordan:
The outcome of this match will probably depend on Raducanu’s fitness. She is managing an injury sustained at last week’s tournament in Strasbourg. At her best and fittest, the Briton is much more comfortable on clay than Wang.
Prediction: Raducanu in 2

Nurein:
Raducanu skipped the French Open last year when she learned she had to play qualifying. That won’t be necessary this time as she got into the main draw by virtue of her ranking. It’s her least-favored surface, but her return game should be too strong for Wang Xinyu.
Prediction: Raducanu in 2

Andreas:
This is not an easy matchup for Raducanu, who is playing at the French Open for the first time since 2022. Wang defeated the Brit when they played once in 2021, but it seems like Raducanu is regaining her form on clay, and playing with confidence and controlled aggression. The Chinese No. 2 has a tricky game when at her best, but she only has one win over a Top 50 player this year, with seven losses against similarly ranked opponents.
Prediction: Raducanu in 2
