Novak Djokovic to Begin Partnership with Andy Murray at Brisbane International

Novak Djokovic has announced that the Brisbane International will be his first tournament of the 2025 season, marking the beginning of his highly anticipated partnership with new coach Andy Murray. The Serbian star, seeking his 25th Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in January, confirmed last month that Murray, a two-time Wimbledon champion, would join his team. Fans eagerly anticipate Djokovic’s debut under Murray’s guidance at the Brisbane event, scheduled from December 29th to January 5th.

The tournament, held at the iconic Pat Rafter Arena, will also feature Australian star Nick Kyrgios returning to competition and Aryna Sabalenka headlining the women’s draw. Djokovic, a 10-time Australian Open champion, is expected to give fans a first glimpse of his collaboration with Murray as he prepares to chase an 11th title at Melbourne Park.

Djokovic’s Decision to Start in Brisbane

Speaking about his plans, Djokovic shared his excitement about returning to Brisbane and beginning his Australian campaign in style. “I’m excited to be kicking off my Australian swing at the Brisbane International and to compete again at Pat Rafter Arena,” Djokovic said. “I am looking forward to experiencing the incredible support from the Australian fans and making this tournament one to remember.”

The choice of Brisbane marks a strategic move for Djokovic, who values the competitive lead-up to the Australian Open. The 37-year-old aims to start his season strong as he seeks to break Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles.

A Challenging 2024 and the Road Ahead

While Djokovic remains one of the greatest players in tennis history, his 2024 season was less fruitful. Ranked world No. 7, he failed to add to his Grand Slam tally, with a semifinal loss to eventual champion Jannik Sinner at the Australian Open being one of the highlights. However, Djokovic remains close to a significant milestone: his 100th ATP title, a feat achieved by only two players, Jimmy Connors (109) and Roger Federer (103).

The new coaching partnership with Murray adds an intriguing layer to Djokovic’s quest for more glory. Murray, who famously lost to Djokovic in four Australian Open finals, will bring his unique insight as a former rival.

Tournament director Cam Pearson expressed enthusiasm about the strong lineup, saying, “We are thrilled to have Novak headlining the Brisbane International 2025 along with world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka. Having a champion like Novak here is a tremendous boost for the tournament.”
