Like we do for the Grand Slams, we at LastWordOnTennis are here to predict the biggest matches of the year for you. At the ATP Finals, that means every match. The matches on the seventh day are the two semifinal matches, and it looks like we have two great ones to watch. Top seed Roger Federer faces David Goffin, while Grigor Dimitrov and Jack Sock will face each other in their ATP Finals debuts. Predicting these matches are myself (Yesh Ginsburg), Brett Margolies, Manuel Traquete, and Steen Kirby.
ATP Finals Semifinals Prediction
Jack Sock vs Grigor Dimitrov
Brett:
Ever since Jack Sock was down 5-1 in the 3rd set against Kyle Edmund in Bercy something seemed to click for the American. He’s playing the best he’s played all year long right now. Dimitrov is playing good as well so this match should be intriguing. Sock has already made it this far so I wouldn’t be surprised if he upset Dimitrov.
Prediction: Sock in 3
Manuel:
Sock has been in great form lately, winning Paris and now unexpectedly finding himself in the semifinals in London. He also owns a 3-1 H2H record against Dimitrov so he’ll fancy his chances of reaching the final match on Sunday, an event that had probably less than 1% chance of happening if you asked any bookies back when Sock found himself 1-5 down in the decider vs Kyle Edmund in Paris.
Dimitrov, on the other hand, is looking to cap a breakthrough season with a final in London and he’s looked in better physical shape at this point of the season than most other contenders. It’s a close match on paper, but Dimitrov starts as the sligth favorite
Prediction: Dimitrov in 3
Steen:
Sock is on fire right now, and although I’d normally go with Dimitrov I have to make the form pick and back the American. Prediction: Sock in 3
Yesh:
Sock is playing the tournament of his life so far–right after playing the tournament of his life two weeks ago in Paris. He’s had his ups and downs–the third set against Zverev was nervy and not very pretty–but has always been able to bring out his best when absolutely against the wall. I think the American will find his top form once again, and set up a rematch with Federer in the final.
Prediction: Sock in 3
Roger Federer vs David Goffin
Brett:
David Goffin made it through to the semifinals after defeating Dominic Thiem easily, but Federer is just a bad matchup for the Belgian. Federer hasn’t been playing great to this point, but has a 6-0 H2H lead against Goffin. I think Federer beats Goffin once again fairly comfortably.
Prediction: Federer in 2
Steen:
Federer is the best player left and the best player on tour right now, I don’t see him tripping up indoors.
Prediction: Federer in 2
Manuel:
Goffin has never beaten Federer and in their most recent match in Basel he only won three games. Nothing we’ve seen this week suggests that this trend is about to change; in fact, despite qualifying the Belgian hasn’t looked at his best physically in this tournament. Anything other than a straightforward win for Federer would be quite a surprise.
Prediction: Federer in 2
Yesh:
There’s not much to say here. Federer is so dominant on this surface and is playing so well right now. The only players who could beat him right now are an in-form Djokovic, Murray, or Nadal. None of those players are in this tournament.
Prediction: Federer in 2
