Day 4 at the ATP event in Newport will only feature two quarterfinal matchups, with the other two being played on Friday. It should still be a very enjoyable day of tennis, with two former American champions taking the court, including the most successful player in tournament history in John Isner. It will also be exciting because it’ll feature two fresh matchups, which had never happened before at ATP tour or Challenger level.
ATP Newport Day 4 Predictions
Steve Johnson vs Maxime Cressy
Head-to-head: first meeting
Cressy was extremely dominant on serve against Krueger, dropping only nine points on his delivery all match. Johnson, on the other hand, caught a lucky break with Jiri Vesely withdrawing and handing him a birth in the quarterfinals. Based on form this year, Cressy is a very clear favorite, he seems to be, in many ways, a better version of Johnson. But reality is that with his serve Johnson certainly has the ability to make it close on this surface and tiebreaks are a very real possibility. Johnson is very comfortable in this tournament, which he won in 2018, and he’ll not make life easy for his fellow big-serving American.
Prediction: Cressy in 3
John Isner vs Benjamin Bonzi
Head-to-head: first meeting
After becoming the all-time ace record-holder at Wimbledon, Isner didn’t miss a beat in his match in Newport, firing 22 aces past Gojowczyk to make it through to the quarterfinals. Bonzi is having a very solid grass season himself, but facing the greatest server in history in this court will probably be too big an ask. Against Isner, though, you’re always in with a chance if you can be solid and consistent on your service games. Isner’s matches are very often decided by tiebreaks and it wouldn’t be a shock if that was the case again here.
Prediction: Isner in 3
