WTA Eastbourne Day 2 Predictions Including Garbine Muguruza vs Magdalena Frech

Garbine Muguruza Rome

There are 12 singles matches on Monday’s 2022 Eastbourne International schedule. Garbine Muguruza has been in a terrible slump recently. The Spaniard opened up her grass-court campaign with a loss to Andrea Petkovic in Berlin. Can she bounce back here against Magdalena Frech?

Heather Watson vs Rebecca Marino

Head-to-head: 1-1

Both players lost in the final qualifying round, but managed to secure lucky loser spots. Heather Watson has a lot more grass experience, but Rebecca Marino impressed recently, taking sets off Maria Sakkari or Jelena Ostapenko. The Brit will enjoy the advantage of playing at home and her crafty all-court style could help her trip up the more powerful game and big serve of Marino.

Prediction: Watson in 3

Camila Osorio vs Lesia Tsurenko

Head-to-head: First meeting

Lesia Tsurenko has been winning qualifying matches pretty consistently of late, the question is whether she’ll now be able to step up. But is Camila Osorio that much of a jump in terms of quality? Probably not on grass, especially as the Colombian is coming off two straightforward losses. In one of them, she took five games off Maria Sakkari, but in the other, she managed only two against Harriet Dart.

Prediction: Tsurenko in 2

Madison Brengle vs Harriet Dart

Head-to-head: First meeting

Speaking of Harriet Dart, she has at least a decent chance to progress to the second round herself. Madison Brengle has historically been better on this surface though and played some solid tennis at a 100K ITF in Surbiton recently, reaching the quarterfinals. Her last week’s loss against Sara Errani was probably a bit more down to the poorly-prepared courts at Gaiba making the Italian’s hand skills and ability to keep the ball in play more important than it usually is on grass. Still, this seems very tight.

Prediction: Brengle in 3

Garbine Muguruza vs Magdalena Frech

Head-to-head: Muguruza 1-0

When Garbine Muguruza won the WTA Finals last year, everyone expected her to have a brilliant campaign in 2022. The Spaniard hasn’t done that at all and is currently struggling for wins and rhythm. This is a nice matchup for her against a player she can easily overpower when she’s playing well. Muguruza’s really out of form right now though and she will not have it that easy. Magdalena Frech is a great fighter too.

Prediction: Muguruza in 3
