What has happened so far at the French Open? Who has impressed? And who looks ready to take home the trophy? Let’s catch up on all of the action so far, now that we’re halfway through the tournament.
French Open Mid-Tournament Report
Women’s Draw
Iga Swiatek is in strong form. She has dismantled her opponents with ease and looks likely to make another final. I’m still holding strong with my prediction for her to take her second French Open title.
Serena Williams will make the final. Her draw has opened up since the departure of stars Naomi Osaka and Aryna Sabalenka. She is now the only Top 10 player in the second half of the draw.
Sloane Stephens is back in form. It is good to see her playing well and back in the second week of a Grand Slam. She has had difficult opponents to play such as Carla Suárez Navarro, Karolína Plíšková, and Karolína Muchová, and has handled those assignments well.
Paula Badosa Gibert is a star. She showed serious grit coming back from the brink against Ana Bogdan and will be a dangerous opponent for anyone in her draw.
Men’s Draw
Rafael Nadal will win the French Open again. End of story.
Daniil Medvedev is looking good. He is moving well and striking the ball nicely. I’ve never understood why he doesn’t enjoy play on clay. Medvedev’s creative style should suit the surface. So it is good to see him playing well. Whether he can dismantle the likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alexander Zverev is another story but his progress is promising.
Matteo Berrettini is living up to the title of dark horse. He has shown good form in his early rounds and is all set for a quarter-final showdown with Novak Djokovic. If Berrettini can impose his big game on the Serbian great, then maybe he can cause an upset.
Stefanos Tsitsipas is still the favorite to make his first Grand Slam final. He has continued his good form in the early rounds of the French Open. His previous semifinal showings at Grand Slam level should leave him in good stead.
