Davis Cup Final Preview and Prediction

Davis Cup

There are not many team competitions in tennis, but the Davis Cup have a special place in many tennis fans’ hearts. It’s a very prestigious tournament between the countries and many would consider Davis Cup as the unofficial tennis world cup.

With the Davis Cup final being just a few weeks away, all the groups have been drawn and the countries participating have announced all the players that have been selected. Before going through my predictions, here is how the tournament format works.

Tournament Format

If you are familiar with the Davis Cup format from previous years, they changed it prior to this years tournament. There are a total of 18 countries participating in this years Davis Cup Finals. They are divided into 6 different groups A-F, with three teams in each group.

The winner in each group and the two best second-placed countries will advance into the quarter-finals. From this stage, there is direct elimination until only one team is left. All matches are played best of 3.

There are a total of 18 teams participating in the 2019 years Davis Cup Finals, divided into six different groups. Here are all the teams participating in each group A-F and my predictions for each group.

Davis Cup Groups & Predictions

Group A

  • France
  • Serbia
  • Japan

This is one of the tougher groups to predict in this years tournament. That is not because of Japan, but because of a very strong France and Serbian side. Both are strong contenders to win the Davis Cup title, so it could go either way.

France, with players like Monfils, Benoit Paire and Tsonga. Serbia with the world No.1 Novak Djokovic, Dusan Lajovic and Filip Krajinovic as the main figures. The France side have a slightly stronger side than Serbia and I expect them to win after a very close battle between the sides. However, Serbia should have a good chance of claiming one of the best second-place spots.

Prediction

  1. France
  2. Serbia
  3. Japan

Group B

  • Croatia
  • Russia
  • Spain

If group A was hard to predict, this one is at least on the same level. This is what I would describe as the “group of death” in this tournament. However, with all the respect for Croatia, it will be a battle between Russia and the Spain side.

Spain with players like Rafael Nadal, Bautista-Agut, and Pablo Carreno-Busta. Russia with players like Medvedev, Khachanov and Andrey Rublev. It could honestly go either way, but with Medvedev and Rublev’s great form, I believe in an upset here and Russia going through. However, Spain will most definitely be one of the best second place countries.

Prediction

  1. Russia
  2. Spain
  3. Croatia

Group C

  • Argentina
  • Chile
  • Germany

Group C is one of the most open groups in this tournament. Three teams that all have good teams, but not anything that should be a threat deeper into the tournament stages. Chile have the overall weakest team in this group and It will stand between Germany and Argentina in this group.

Argentina with players like Guido Pella, Diego Schwartzman and Leonardo Mayer. Germany with players like Jan-Lennard Struff, Kohlschreiber and the US Open sensational Dominik Koepfer. It will be a close battle between the them, but I expect Germany to win this group.

Prediction

  1. Germany
  2. Argentina
  3. Chile

Group D

  • Australia
  • Belgium
  • Colombia

One of the easiest groups to predict. Belgium and Colombia have not much to bring to the table here against a very strong Australian side. With players like Nick Kyrgios, John Millman and Alex De Minaur, they should with this group without any problems.

The only name worthy player in the Belgium and Colombia squad, is the Belgian David Goffin. Apart from him, there are not a single player inside the top 50 rankings. Expect Australia to win this group.

Prediction

  1. Australia
  2. Belgium
  3. Colombia

Group E

  • Great Britain
  • Kazakhstan
  • Netherlands

This group is most definitely the weakest group in the tournament. Three pretty weak teams that won’t have anything to do with the Davis Cup title. Netherlands is weakest team here, so It will be a close battle between the Great Britain side and Kazakhstan.

Great Britain with players like Andy Murray, Jamie Murray, and Dan Evans. Kazakstan with players like Kukushkin, Bublik, and Dmitry Popko. It’s always hard to predict a player like Andy Murray, but from what i have seen from him this season, I don’t expect him to win a match here against Kazakhstan. All in all, I think Kazakhstan will win this group after a very close battle against the Great Britain side.

Prediction

  1. Kazakshtan
  2. Great Britain
  3. Netherlands

Group F

  • Canada
  • Italy
  • United States

I mentioned that group C was the group of death, but honestly, this group is even. Three countries that all have teams that have the potential to win the Davis Cup title. Any team could win this group, but Canada and Italy have slightly stronger teams than the USA.

Canada with players like Shapovalov, Raonic and Felix Auger-Aliassime. Italy with players like Berettini, Fognini, and Lorenzo Sonego. With Raonic and Auger-Aliassime being in awful form, I would be surprised if the Italian side don’t win this group.

Prediction

  1. Italy
  2. Canada
  3. United States
