Jamie Murray Headlining 2019 Murray Trophy
It’s very common that an ATP Challenger event goes unnoticed in a city with not many people attending the event. However, when the British LTA (Lawn Tennis Association) decides to rename the Glasgow Challenger to the “Murray Trophy” and the former world no. 1 and seven-time Grand Slam champion, Jamie Murray, announces he is coming to play the tournament named after his family – a significant interest and a nice buzz is generated around the city of Glasgow.
Murray, who is arguably the headline player of the event, is playing with Australian John-Patrick Smith. The pair defeated British wildcards Marshall Tutu and Daniel Wright 6-4 6-2 in the first round in less than an hour to advance to the next round.
The near-capacity crowd at the Scotstoun Leisure Centre came out in full swing to support Murray, who was born and raised in Glasgow. Murray said after the match about playing here in his hometown: “It is very special. A lot of fun. Obviously you don’t get the chance to play in Scotland very often.”

“This week, I guess, has been really important for me. It’s nice to get a lot of ppl to come ad watch the match tonight. Hopefully, Friday will be the same.”
When asked about whether Andy will support on Friday, the 33-year-old said, “No. He’s going to China tomorrow. Or maybe today even.”
Murray and Smith will play their second-round match on Friday.
What is the ATP Challenger Tour?
The ATP Challenger Tour is the second tier of men’s professional tennis. It is designed as a stepping stone for players to further develop their skills to compete on the ATP Tour- the highest level of men’s professional tennis. For instance, players like Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic all used the Challenger Tour to reach where they are now.
Also, it is used for experienced players who are just coming back from injury to get back to their highest level. For example, Andy Murray played the Mallorca Challenger recently for his comeback.
