ATP Washington Day 2 Predictions
Ugo Humbert vs Andres Martin
Head-to-head: First meeting
Martin came up with the goods in two upset qualifying wins this past weekend, as he’s looking to top his career-high ranking of No. 250. Humbert has a tricky game off both his serve and groundstrokes, and the Frenchman has never lost a match at this tournament–he had to withdraw in the quarterfinals of the 2023 edition, the only time he played here. With far more experience at Tour-level, Humbert should advance to the second round, though Martin should be able to excite the crowd as the home favorite.

Marcos Giron vs Cruz Hewitt
Head-to-head: First meeting
Cruz Hewitt, son of two-time Grand Slam champion Lleyton Hewitt, will make his ATP Tour main draw debut here, after a bit of perseverance in the heat, and luck. He won two qualifying matches via retirement, but his most recent match was especially impressive; he clawed back from 6-1 5-3 before illness forced Zachary Svadja to call it quits. Hewitt’s in fine form overall, as he reached the boys final of Wimbledon. Giron, however, has steady groundstrokes and particularly plays well at home on hard courts. The American’s ranking has dropped a bit in 2026, but I suspect he’ll be confident and win this match easily.

Brandon Nakashima vs Tomas Martin Etcheverry
Head-to-head: Etcheverry 1-0
Nakashima, at 24, is nearing his career-high ranking of No. 29 in the world, and he’ll like his chances during the North American home court swing. Etcheverry took out Nakashima on the clay courts of Barcelona in 2024, and the Argentinian stuck to the clay this season after Wimbledon. Both are steady baseline players, but I think Nakashima should be too solid in the big points, with momentum in his favor.
Prediction: Nakashima in 3
Kamil Majchrzak vs Tommy Paul
Head-to-head: 1-1
Paul, the newlywed, will have to take on a player he hasn’t faced since the summer of 2019. That match occurred in similarly humid conditions, though it was a qualifying match in the ATP 250 Atlanta event. Paul has come a long way since then, though Majchrzak is a tricky player, with a big serve and variety around the court. The American may face a slow start, but he should use the crowd to his advantage, and prevail in a close one.
