The six remaining first-round matches will be played on Day 2 of the WTA Washington Mubadala DC Open, and there will be some big names in action. This article features former World No.1 Venus Williams taking on Anastasia Potapova. As always, we at LWOT will offer predictions for every match on the slate, but who will advance?
WTA Washington Day 2 Predictions
Magdalena Frech vs Ann Li
Head-to-Head: Frech 0-1 Li
Magdalena Frech had a forgettable grass-court season as she went winless in the main draws. She made the quarterfinals here last year and needs a win to get back on track. Ann Li has been more consistent this season and already played a couple of matches on hard last week in Athens, which will help her and give her a better shot at winning this match. Li has also never lost to Frech on the professional tour, and I think she will extend the streak.
Prediction: Li in 3
Ashlyn Krueger vs Katie Boulter
Head-to-Head: Krueger 2-1 Boulter
These two players are ranked close to each other and have no points to defend this week, which is an opportunity to improve their rankings. Ashlyn Krueger has never won a match here, while Katie Boulter’s only win came in 2018. Krueger was in fantastic form during the grass season and will look to carry the momentum here. Boulter’s results have been mixed this season, which doesn’t give me enough confidence to back her against a home player.
Prediction: Krueger in 3
Venus Williams vs Anastasia Potapova
Head-to-Head: first meeting
Venus Williams has shown glimpses of great tennis in some of her matches this season, but she has not been able to maintain it long enough to win. She is on a 10-match losing streak, and her last win came at this very tournament last year. Anastasia Potapova is a tough opponent, and despite a terrible grass-court season, she is a better player than the American at this stage of their careers, and I am backing her to win this.
Prediction: Potapova in 2
