Just under four years since playing her last match at a Major at the 2022 US Open, Serena Williams will once again be competing in a singles match at a Major tomorrow, this time around at Wimbledon.
Ever since the legendary player re-entered the drug testing pool required to be eligible to play professional tennis last year, people have wondered where Williams would make her return. And while she has already returned in doubles competition during the lead-up grass events to Wimbledon, she will now once again be going solo at a tournament where she has produced some of the most historic moments of her career. As always, we here at LWOT will bring you all the details on how to catch the match live.
Serena Williams Returns
Match Preview
Her first assignment back in singles will be against the talented youngster Maya Joint, who, admittedly, is having a rough season so far. Williams had already won seven Major singles titles before Joint was even born.
Stylistically, while Williams has repeatedly stated that her return is not about results, this match should come down to how well Joint can handle her nerves and the pressure of facing such a legendary player. Beyond that, a key factor will likely be how well Joint returns Williams’ legendary serve, which, in the limited doubles action we have seen over the past few weeks, still looks as good as ever.
At this point in her career, expecting Williams to grind out matches or be at her best defensively is not a feasible option. Free points behind her serve will therefore be crucial for the American, which will, in turn, add even more pressure on Joint to hold serve consistently. While Joint has the baseline game to trouble a Williams who has not played a singles match in almost four years, her own serve might be susceptible, as Williams will look to attack aggressively on return.
And if the stars all align, who is to say that Williams does not have one more legendary moment left in her on a court that has become synonymous with legendary moments?
