Serena Williams has finally ended months of speculation, officially announcing via social media that she would be making her much-talked-about comeback to the sport she dominated for so many years. There had been rife speculation since the tail end of last year, when she joined the drug testing pool, stirring rumours of a potential return. The former world No. 1 had, at the time, dispelled any such notions. However, the coming weeks provided even more reasons to believe.
Serena Williams Returns
No Smoke Without a Fire
In an interview earlier this year with The Today Show, the younger of the Williams sisters was far less dismissive of the idea when asked about her return, and she noticeably avoided offering a direct answer, even as the host pressed her. There were also rumours that she was practising with current players, which further fuelled the speculation. Now it all adds up.
Her return marks a momentous day for tennis, a sport she dominated for large spells of her career. The American amassed a total ofย 73 singles titles, including 23 Grand Slam titles–a haul second only to Margaret Court. She also enjoyed a 319-week stay as World No. 1, including a 186-week stretch, making her the joint record holder with Steffi Graf. Such was her dominance that on two separate occasions, she held all four Slams simultaneously.
What To Expect?
Her return to tennis automatically makes her the most decorated active player on the WTA Tour and the second-most decorated across both tours, only behind Novak Djokovic. And while there will be plenty who look forward to seeing her return to the courts, a few will wonder what her motivation really is as she turns 45 in September. Is she simply coming back to enjoy playing professional tennis again, or does she hope to win some important trophies? There would be those who would wonder if she should even have returned at all.
What is not in doubt, though, is that her first match back will receive lots of fanfare and media attention. Something that will benefit the sport overall. Fans of the American will be hoping she can recapture some of her old form, especially with Wimbledon and the US Open around the corner. With both tournaments representing competitions, she achieved so much success. Whether she can emulate her previous exploits is an entirely different matter, and we won’t have an answer to that until she’s taken to court a few times.
After months of speculation, it seems we now have a clear conclusion to this back-and-forth. The Queen is back!
