Wimbledon Day 1 Predictions Daniil Medvedev vs Marin Cilic

Summertime is in full swing in Europe, and that means one thing: the 2026 Wimbledon Championships are upon us. The intrigue at the most prestigious event in tennis could not be higher on the men’s side as Daniil Medvedev squares off against Marin Cilic in a Round 1 blockbuster. As always, we at LWOT offer our roundtable analysis and predictions on each match. Let’s dive in.

Wimbledon Day 1 Predictions

Luciano Darderi vs Ethan Quinn

Ilemona
Darderi has continued to improve away from clay this season, bringing more confidence to faster surfaces. Quinn has shown encouraging progress, but Darderi’s heavier groundstrokes and growing experience at tour level could make the difference over five sets.
Prediction: Darderi in 5

Zain
Luciano Darderi is a typical clay-court player who likes to grind out points from the baseline. Against Ethan Quinn, a player who is aggressive and has bigger weapons, Darderi will have to have a great defensive day and hope Quinn misses more than he makes. While that is possible, I still favor the player whose style is more suited to grass.
Prediction: Quinn in 4

Tope
Ethan Quinn arrives at Wimbledon riding the momentum of a maiden tour-level final in Mallorca. His first-round opponent, Luciano Darderi is no stranger to SW19 having reached the third round on his debut last year. The turnaround from Mallorca is brutal, and that fatigue factor could be Quinn’s biggest enemy on Monday. Hold serve consistently and press on Darderi’s, though, and the American has every reason to back himself through.
Prediction: Quinn in 5

Martin Landaluce vs Soonwoo Kwon

Ilemona
Landaluce has enjoyed a breakthrough season and arrives with growing confidence after several strong Challenger results. Kwon has the experience and an aggressive game that translates well to grass, but Landaluce’s recent momentum gives him a slight edge if he serves consistently.
Prediction: Landaluce in 5

Zain
Soon-woo Kwon showed some good tennis to qualify for the main draw here, using his aggressive baselining. Martin Landaluce is a player who plays on similar principles, looking to cause damage from the baseline. On grass, I trust Landaluce’s consistency from the back of the court more, which is the tipping point for me in the Spaniard’s favor.
Prediction: Landaluce in 4

Tope
Soonwoo Kwon has been ruthless at Challenger level with 25 wins from 30 matches this year, and that confidence will count for something on the lawns of SW19. His opponent, Martin Landaluce, although presents a stiff test even though his grass-court warm-up was, however, underwhelming. Kwon’s form and rhythm through qualifying could prove the decisive edge in what shapes up as a genuinely competitive opener.
Prediction: Kwon in 5

Camilo Ugo Carabelli vs Daniel Merida

Ilemona
Both players are more accustomed to slower surfaces, making this an interesting test of who adapts quicker to the grass. Ugo Carabelli has generally produced the stronger results throughout the season, and his greater experience at ATP level should help him manage the key moments.
Prediction: Ugo Carabelli in 4

Zain
Both of these players, who will also be playing doubles together at Wimbledon, are traditional clay-courters, so this is another match on grass that will likely involve very little traditional grass-court tennis. I expect a long physical battle, one in which Camilo Ugo Carabelli’s slightly more potent groundstrokes ultimately end up paying off.
Prediction: Ugo Carabelli in 5

Tope
Camilo Ugo Carabelli has never won a match on grass at tour level and Daniel Merida is equally unproven on the surface, failing to even clear qualifying at Queen’s Club after losing in straight sets to Martin Damm. The Spaniard does carry momentum of a different kind, however: a stunning run to the Bucharest Open final on his ATP Tour debut earlier this season signalling a player capable of rising to big occasions. With grass suiting neither man particularly well, this should be a tight, tentative affair and small margins will likely decide who advances.
Prediction: Merida in 5

Daniil Medvedev vs Marin Cilic

Ilemona
This is one of the most interesting first-round matches, with Cilic returning to the tournament where he reached the final in 2017. The Croatian still has the serve and forehand to make stretches of the match competitive, but Medvedev’s consistency from the baseline and recent success on grass should allow him to gradually take control.
Prediction: Medvedev in 5

Zain
Both of these players faced off against each other on grass a couple of weeks ago, where Daniil Medvedev won in three sets. Marin Cilic’s big game can always pose difficulties on grass, as he famously took out Jack Draper at this tournament just last year. But the Croatian is still well past his peak, and despite Medvedev also regressing from his best, especially at Majors, over the past couple of years, he should have enough counterpunching to get a hard-fought win here.
Prediction: Medvedev in 4

Tope
Marin Cilic has the kind of grass-court pedigree that makes him genuinely dangerous on this surface as is Daniil Medvedev, yet haunted by a shocking first-round exit at this event last year. The Russian leads their head-to-head 4-1 overall and 2-0 on grass, including a win just a fortnight ago in Rosmalen, though it took three sets to do so, a detail Cilic will draw encouragement from. Their last Wimbledon meeting, five years ago, also needed five sets before Medvedev edged through, so expect another extended battle if Cilic finds his range on serve and the forehand. Medvedev’s consistency should carry him over the line, but this is far from a routine opener.
Prediction: Medvedev in 5
