In tennis, every now and then, there have been rare non-tennis situations that have occurred during matches that firmly fall into the category of bizarre but add to the spectacle. These events are so random and have nothing to do with the tennis. If you’ve been following the sport for a bit, you’d think you’ve seen it all. But you’d be wrong.
Another Bizarre Night For Tennis
During the quarterfinal match between Luciano Darderi and Spanish wonderkid Rafael Jodar, smoke emanated from the nearby Stadio Olimpico and drifted onto the tennis courts. The match that was played at the Stadio Olimpico, involving the football teams Inter Milan and Lazio, was the Coppa Italia final, in which Inter had won.
As is the Italian way, celebrations had led to fireworks, with thick grey smoke wafting across to the Foro Italico. The smoke was so dense that, in addition to Darderi complaining he couldn’t see the ball, it was interfering with the cameras for the electronic line-calling system.
Play had to be stopped for about twenty minutes, with Jodar leading the first set 6-5 (15-0). When play resumed, he lost the first set in a tiebreaker. And despite rallying back impressively to win the second, he wilted away in the third, losing 6-0 as the Italian made the night even more memorable for the Italian crowd.
Other Notable Occurrences
It marks another memorable occurrence during a tennis match. And we’ve had quite a few ranging from the absurd to the frankly amusing. To get things into perspective, let’s take a look at some of these events that have left onlookers perplexed.
2024 Indian Wells Bee Invasion
During a quarterfinal match between Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev, a massive swarm of bees invaded the court. Alcaraz even got stung for good measure. Play had to be halted while a beekeeper arrived to vacuum the bees away.
Miami Iguanas
A large iguana interrupted a 2017 Miami Open match between Tommy Haas and Jiri Vesely, causing an 8-minute delay in the final set. Haas even had time to take a selfie with the lizard before it was removed.
2022 French Open Net Handcuffs
During the French Open semifinal between Casper Ruud and Marin Cilic, an environmental activist ran onto the court and handcuffed herself to the net. She was wearing a shirt that read “We have 1028 days left.” The disturbance caused a 15-minute delay while security used bolt cutters to remove her.
The Sarasota “Noises” (2017):
A Challenger match between Frances Tiafoe and Mitchell Krueger had to stop because of incredibly loud, suggestive “noises” sounds coming from a nearby apartment. Tiafoe famously yelled, “It can’t be that good!” as the crowd erupted in laughter.
More Elation In the Italian Capital?
For Darderi and the Italian fans, it marks another special night. The 24-year-old Italian put up a spectacular showing and has now made his first ever Masters 1000 semifinal, where he’d face the rejuvenated Casper Ruud. With Jannik Sinner expected to come through the other side of the draw, it means there is still a possibility of an all-Italian final if Darderi can pull up one more surprise. The celebrations in the Italian capital might just be getting started. Stay tuned!
