The European clay swing is entering its final chapter, and ATP Gstaad has once again delivered an entertaining week of tennis (so far). The altitude adds another layer to the challenge, rewarding aggressive shot-making while still demanding patience from the baseline. With a place in the semifinals on the line, expect a lineup of fascinating contests between players arriving with confidence for different reasons. As always, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every quarterfinal, but who will advance?
ATP Gstaad Quarterfinal Predictions
Raphael Collignon vs Valentin Vacherot
Head-to-head: first meeting
Raphael Collignon has continued his impressive rise this season, backing up a string of strong Challenger results with increasingly consistent performances on the ATP Tour. The Belgian has looked comfortable in Gstaad, recovering from a slow start in the opening round before producing another composed display to reach the last eight. His heavy forehand and willingness to dictate rallies have been particularly effective in the altitude.
Valentin Vacherot has enjoyed an encouraging return after injury and has looked sharp throughout the week. The Monegasque strikes the ball cleanly off both wings and is comfortable taking time away from opponents. His confidence has steadily grown with each match, and clay remains a surface where he can build points patiently before finishing them.
Both players have enjoyed breakthrough campaigns, and there is little separating them on current form. Collignon’s confidence and ability to raise his level in key moments this week give him a slight edge.
Prediction: Collignon in 2
Arthur Rinderknech vs Stefanos Tsitsipas
Head-to-head: Tsitsipas 1-0 Rinderknech
Arthur Rinderknech has adapted well after Wimbledon, serving impressively and taking advantage of the quicker conditions at ATP Gstaad. The Frenchman has always been more comfortable on faster surfaces, but his aggressive first-strike tennis has worked well at altitude. If he continues to protect his serve, he should remain competitive throughout.
Stefanos Tsitsipas appears to be rediscovering some confidence after an inconsistent first half of the season. The Greek had to battle through a difficult opening match before booking his place in the quarterfinals, and clay has historically brought out some of his best tennis. His heavy forehand and one-handed backhand are especially effective when he has time to dictate points.
Rinderknech has the serve and power from the baseline to keep sets close, but Tsitsipas’ greater variety and greater aptitute for clay-court tennisshould allow him to create enough opportunities on return.
Prediction: Tsitsipas in 3
Juan Manuel Cerundolo vs Casper Ruud
Head-to-head: Cerundolo 1-0 Ruud
This is a rematch of one of last year’s biggest surprises at ATP Gstaad. Juan Manuel Cerundolo stunned Casper Ruud in the quarterfinals, recovering from an early deficit in the deciding set. That result should give the Argentine confidence as he returns to the same stage twelve months later.
Cerundolo has once again shown why clay is his best surface. His heavy topspin, consistency from the baseline, and willingness to extend rallies have carried him through another impressive week. He has looked composed under pressure and is clearly comfortable playing in the altitude, where his patience and court coverage become even more effective.
Ruud, meanwhile, looks increasingly settled after returning from the grass season. The Norwegian has built his reputation as one of the ATP Tour’s premier clay-courters, using his heavy forehand, outstanding movement, and tactical discipline to wear opponents down. He has looked sharper with each match this week and will undoubtedly be motivated by the opportunity to avenge last year’s defeat.
Cerundolo has already proved he can beat Ruud in these conditions, but rematches often come down to who makes the better adjustments. Ruud’s experience, improved level throughout the week, and determination to avoid a repeat of last year’s result should help him edge another physical contest.
Prediction: Ruud in 3
