Carlos Alcaraz vs Joao Fonseca: ATP Miami 2026 Second Round How to Watch and Match Details

For the first time in an official Tour match, Carlos Alcaraz and Joao Fonseca will go head-to-head in a matchup that many feel could become a regular occurrence over the next half-decade.

This face-off between the World No. 1 and the most hyped teenager in the sport is expected to be one of the most-watched second-round matches at a tournament in quite some time. We here at LWOT bring you a complete match guide.

Carlos Alcaraz vs Joao Fonseca: Miami Open 2026

Match Preview

Despite this being their first-ever Tour meeting, Fonseca and Alcaraz have actually faced each other before, also in Miami, when they took part in the Miami Invitational exhibition a couple of months ago during the offseason. On that occasion, Alcaraz prevailed in a match tiebreak. However, this upcoming clash on Friday is not only much bigger in terms of stakes, but also in intensity.

Fonseca enters the match after a solid first-round win against a tricky opponent. However, it was his tight two-set loss to Sinner at Indian Wells that makes this matchup particularly tantalizing, as the Brazilian pushed Sinner as much as any player did throughout the tournament.

The battle of raw power between two players who arguably possess the biggest forehands on Tour will be fascinating, especially on a court that rewards aggressive play due to its fast nature. Fonseca will look to serve well and keep points as linear as possible to avoid exposing the glaring weaknesses in his game, his court coverage and movement.

It will be Alcaraz’s job to construct enough rallies to expose those weaknesses. If Alcaraz uses his variety, particularly drop shots and slices, he should be able to put Fonseca in difficult positions during rallies. Combined with the fact that the Spaniard is the superior returner, he should, in theory, have both the return and baseline edge in this matchup.

But then again, less than a week ago, Fonseca showed that he is capable of challenging the very best in tennis, even though he is still a developing player.

Match Time and Where to Watch

The second-round clash is scheduled to begin not before 7:00 PM local time in Miami, headlining the night session (8:00 PM in São Paulo, 11:00 PM GMT, 12:00 AM in Madrid).

About Zain Mustafa

Being brought up in a sports-watching home, some of the spheres flying across the TV screen stuck with me more than others, the yellow fuzzy one probably the most. A lefty Mallorcan got me into it, a righty Murcian has kept me in it after him, but to be honest, once I was in, I never felt like leaving anyway.
