Rafael Nadal Set for First Visit to Australian Open Since Retirement

22-time Major champion Rafael Nadal is set to make his first appearance back at the Australian Open since his 2023 campaign, which was cut short by a hip injury–an issue that not only ended his season prematurely but ultimately proved to be the catalyst for the Spaniard’s retirement in 2024.

The former world No.1 will be accompanied by Australian tennis icons Ashleigh Barty and Dylan Alcott for a special “Night of Legends” event on February 1, held on the day of the Australian Open men’s singles final.

Nadal’s Legacy in Melbourne

A two-time champion in Melbourne, Nadal will always be remembered at the Australian Open for the Miracle in Melbourne in 2022, where he produced the seemingly impossible–coming back from two sets down and three break points in the final to win his 21st Major title and make history at the time.

But Nadal’s legacy at Melbourne Park goes far beyond trophies.

He has been central to some of the tournament’s greatest matches, including his epic semifinal against Fernando Verdasco and his classic final against Roger Federer during his 2009 title run, the longest Slam final in history against Novak Djokovic in 2012, and his unforgettable 2017 final against Federer, which signalled his return to Slam contention after a couple of difficult seasons.

Night of Legends Event Details

Now, the legendary Spaniard, alongside two of Australia’s most cherished modern-day tennis icons, will take part in a fun, interactive celebration marking the 25-year partnership between Tennis Australia and car manufacturer Kia, which has also sponsored Nadal for over two decades.

The event will feature live DJ performances, fan experiences, competitions with prizes including tickets to the men’s final, and a once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunity with Nadal. Tickets are now live for the event, and all attendees will also receive complimentary access to remain in Kia Arena to watch the men’s singles final on the big screens later that day.

About Zain Mustafa

Being brought up in a sports-watching home, some of the spheres flying across the TV screen stuck with me more than others, the yellow fuzzy one probably the most. A lefty Mallorcan got me into it, a righty Murcian has kept me in it after him, but to be honest, once I was in, I never felt like leaving anyway.
