Dayana Yastremska created headlines on grass a few weeks ago by reaching the Nottingham Open final and beating Coco Gauff at Wimbledon. The Ukrainian has switched back to clay for the WTA 250 in Hamburg and will play Diane Parry in the Round of 16. Three other matches are also scheduled, and we at LWOT predict all the action.
WTA Hamburg Day 4 Predictions
Viktoriya Tomova vs Astra Sharma
Head-to-head: Tomova 1-0 Sharma
Tomova defeated the in-form Tatjana Maria, who recently won the Queen’s Club Championships and reached the final in Newport, although they were both on grass. Sharma overcame Ariana Geerlings Martinez in three sets to set up this meeting. Although the Australian’s firepower always makes her dangerous, I favor Tomova slightly more in this matchup to stay solid and extract enough errors from Sharma.
Prediction: Tomova in 3
Anna Bondar vs Sinja Kraus
Head-to-head: Bondar 2-0 Kraus
Bondar’s deciding set tiebreak victory against 2023 runner-up Noma Noha Akugue was the most thrilling match of the tournament so far. Kraus also won a tight three-set battle against Berfu Cengiz. Bondar’s level is more reliable, especially on clay. Akugue produced some great tennis in front of her home fans, but it did not prove enough. I doubt Kraus will play better than that.
Prediction: Bondar in 2
Ekaterina Alexandrova vs Caroline Werner
Head-to-head: Alexandrova 1-0 Werner
Alexandrova’s appearance at this event, instead of switching straight to hard courts, was surprising. If the No. 1 seed plays near her best, as she did in a 6-0 6-3 win against Eva Vedder in the opening round, she could be challenging to stop. World No. 303 Werner will receive support from the German crowd, but that is unlikely to inspire an upset.
Prediction: Alexandrova in 2
Dayana Yastremska vs Diane Parry
Head-to-head: First meeting
At her best, Parry is a very good clay-court player. However, the Frenchwoman has not had much success on her favorite surface this year and only narrowly beat Tara Wurth in the previous round. Yastremska was more convincing against Jule Niemeier, triumphing in straight sets. Parry is capable of challenging and beating the Ukrainian on clay, but I trust Yastremska’s level slightly more right now.
Prediction: Yastremska in 3
