British women’s No.1 and 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu has dragged this year’s Wimbledon into a full-throttle frenzy with a straight-sets victory over 2023 champion Markéta Vondroušová, winning 6-3 6-3.
Raducanu dominated from start to finish, with her backhand and impeccable second serve causing Vondroušová all sorts of trouble. She looked completely locked in throughout, never once losing focus as she closed in on victory, even with the buoyant Centre Court crowd in full party mode.
A Game That Backs Up Raducanu’s Confidence In Her Play
Raducanu has spoken about how much happier she has become with her game in recent months, and today’s performance seems to prove just how freely she’s playing. In a wild three-game stretch during the first set, she broke Vondroušová’s serve–only to be broken back immediately. From there, Raducanu reset, intensified her play in the next game, and at the fourth break-point opportunity, forced the Czech into an error to seal the break for 5-3, holding the next game to take the set.
After earning a break in the third game of the second set, Raducanu never truly looked in trouble. Instead, she played key moments with stunning focus and intensity, relentlessly targeting Vondroušová with fierce backhands that either whizzed past the Czech with a hummingbird blur or forced her into frustrating errors.
Another rasping Raducanu backhand brought up match point, and when the former champion sent the ball long, both the crowd and Raducanu smiled ear to ear, witnessing the form that helped her claim her US Open title finally shine through on Centre Court.
Next Up – The World Number One
Despite the obvious glee in her performance, Raducanu must now shift her focus to a third-round showdown with world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, who secured a hard-fought 7‑6 6‑4 victory over Marie Bouzková. It’s almost certain this will be played on Centre Court, so the crowd will be partisan for the Brit. If she can find a way to pierce Sabalenka’s steely resolve, then there’s every chance the party may well continue into the weekend.
