Houston is the only remaining ATP Tour event on clay in the United States. The conditions are unique too with the Har-Tru surface being much closer to what we know as green clay than the European red dirt. Some big names will be competing on Monday already, with former winner Cristian Garin and former runner-up Tomas Martin Etcheverry. Alex Michelsen and Learner Tien will take on each other in a Next Gen Finals rematch. Who do you think will advance?
ATP Houston Day 1 Predictions
Brandon Holt vs Corentin Denolly
Head-to-head: First meeting
Qualifying for this event was already a massive achievement for Corentin Denolly, who had never even played any main tour qualifying events besides some Roland Garros wildcards years back. The win he got over Adrian Mannarino was pretty special too, from 1-4 down in the third set and saving 13/16 break points. But now he’s running into Brandon Holt, who’s been in very strong form this season with a couple of Challenger titles (Nonthaburi-3, Bangalore). The American is mounting up a Top 100 push and really shouldn’t be going down here.
Prediction: Holt in 2
Cristian Garin vs Alexander Ritschard
Head-to-head: First meeting
Cristian Garin has a fantastic record at this event, taking the title in 2019 and not losing before the quarterfinals in three appearances. The Chilean has been suffering from countless injuries in recent years and that trophy from years ago feels like something he just can’t obtain right now. But maybe he can get something going? Alexander Ritschard was amazing on green clay in 2024 (and that’s essentially the surface in Houston, just painted red), but has very little momentum right now.
Prediction: Garin in 3
Taro Daniel vs Jenson Brooksby
Head-to-head: First meeting
Jenson Brooksby is still a bit up-and-down in the early days of his comeback and even this qualifying run was a good example. The American was match point down to Federico Agustin Gomez in the opening round before firing up. While never a master of clay, the 24-year-old can do fine on Har-Tru and won the Challenger in Tallahassee four years ago. Considering Taro Daniel’s form this season, this looks like a fantastic opportunity for the returning Brooksby to claim another main tour win.
Prediction: Brooksby in 2
Aleksandar Kovacevic vs Tomas Martin Etcheverry
Head-to-head: First meeting
Tomas Martin Etcheverry was the runner-up in Houston two years ago and backed it up with a semifinal run last season. The question is whether he’ll be able to keep it up in a season that’s been extremely mediocre for him thus far. Typically he’s much stronger on clay than Aleksandar Kovacevic, but on this particular version of the surface it’s not a major difference. Etcheverry’s previous runs and baseline excellence are enough to make him a small favorite.
Prediction: Etcheverry in 3
Alex Michelsen vs Learner Tien
Head-to-head: Tien 1-0
Learner Tien has practically no clay experience, green or red. We’re going to learn a lot about his ability to adapt to this surface in 2025, but on paper his game likes quicker conditions and getting some pop from the courts. Even on the unique Houston clay, he’s going to have to deal with being forced to inject his own pace and spin most of the time. He and Alex Michelsen know each other so well and he was able to take his compatriot down at the Next Gen Finals. This could be a solid opportunity to exact revenge.
Prediction: Michelsen in 3
