Four Players Receive Indian Wells Wild Cards

The 2025 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells is on the horizon. The joint ATP Masters/WTA 1000 tournament is dubbed by many tennis observers as the “Fifth Grand Slam” due to its ever-increasing popularity, colossal prize money pool, and strong fields of players.

Carlos Alcaraz will be the red-hot favorite to win the men’s title. He has reigned supreme in each of the last two years, but it is Novak Djokovic who jointly holds the record for the most titles with five (together with Roger Federer). The Serbian played in the California desert last year for the first time since 2019. His search for a 100th career title continues after succumbing to an early exit in Doha.

World No. 2 Iga Swiatek walked away with the top prize for the second time in her career in last year’s final. It’s been over three decades since the last successful title defense of the Indian Wells women’s event.

The player list for the ATP and WTA draws have been revealed. Moreover, the first batch of Indian Wells wild cards was recently announced and it features some interesting selections.

Four Players Receive Indian Wells Wild Cards

The first wild card recipient is seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams. The 44-year-old American has played a total of 16 matches in the last three years and hasn’t featured in 2025. This will be her 10th main draw appearance and her sixth visit to the Indian Wells Tennis Garden since taking the joint decision to boycott the tournament with her sister Serena in 2001. Venus is a three-time semifinalist in Indian Wells but lost in the first round last year.

The second wild card has gone to two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova. The Czech lefty will play in her first WTA tournament since becoming a mother at the WTA 250 in Austin, Texas. And she’s now slated to play her first WTA 1000 in Indian Wells in early March. Kvitova could potentially celebrate her 35th birthday in the second week of the tournament. She is a three-time quarterfinalist in Indian Wells.

The third name on this list is that of rising Brazilian prodigy Joao Fonseca. The 18-year-old has taken the tennis world by storm in recent weeks after a memorable Grand Slam main draw debut at the Australian Open in January. Fonseca stormed to win his first ATP title in Buenos Aires this month and will play in Indian Wells for the first time.

Another player in line to make his debut in the desert is Learner Tien. A junior rival of Fonseca and one of the most promising American talents, Tien occupies a career-high ranking of World No. 80. He reached the second week of the year’s first Grand Slam in Melbourne. The 19-year-old won three Challenger titles last season, all on home soil.

Main draw action in Indian Wells will commence on Sunday, March 5.
