Alex Michelsen produced the first big upset of the 2025 Australian Open, defeating 2023 finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-5 3-6 6-2 6-4 on Monday to charge into the second round. In a remarkable display of talent and determination, the 20-year-old American delivered a jaw-dropping blow to Greek 11th seed, pulling off one of the biggest surprises in the tournament’s opening round. The 20-year-old’s victory, marked by his fearless play and strategic brilliance, sent shockwaves through Melbourne Park and energized the tennis world.
Michelsen, who had previously beaten Tsitsipas at the Japan Open in 2024, displayed poise under pressure and remarkable shot-making throughout the match. He quickly established control, racing to a 2-0 lead in the opening set before securing it with a backhand winner. Despite losing momentum in the third set, the American’s aggressive net play and unwavering focus helped him regain control in the fourth, ultimately sealing the match. His performance, which included 46 winners and eight aces, showcased his readiness to challenge the sport’s elite.
A Breakthrough Victory for Michelsen
The victory, however, was not without its challenges. Michelsen committed three double faults midway through the fourth set, allowing Tsitsipas to claw back into contention. But a critical double fault from the Greek at 5-all in the final set gave the American tennis star the decisive break. This win marked the World No.42 first Top 20 victory at a major, propelling him to a career-high No. 41 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings.
The young American now improves to 2-0 against Tsitsipas, having also defeated the 2019 Nitto ATP Finals champion in Tokyo last year. In the second round, Michelsen will next face either Spanish qualifier Martin Landaluce or Australian wild card James McCabe.
For Tsitsipas, the loss marks a continuation of a troubling trend. The 26-year-old has now failed to advance beyond the second round in his past three Majors, having exited Wimbledon in the second round and the US Open in the first round last year.
Michelsen’s Star Continues to Rise
Stefanos Tsitsipas became the first seeded player in the 2025 Australian Open to be upset, with Michelsen making a strong statement in his Grand Slam debut.
