Turkish tennis star Altug Celikbilek faced a life-threatening medical emergency during the M15 Monastir tournament in Tunisia. The 28-year-old reportedly suffered a brain hemorrhage during his semifinal match against fellow Turkish player Yanki Erel. The Antalya native, ranked world No. 451, collapsed on the court after just one game, leading to immediate medical intervention. The match was abruptly halted, and Celikbilek was rushed to a local hospital, where the condition was diagnosed.
According to Corriere Dello Sport plans were being made to transport him to Turkey for specialized surgery. The Turkish Tennis Federation and the Tunisian Embassy collaborated to provide full support for Celikbilek and his family during this critical period.
Turkish Tennis Federation’s Statement
The Turkish Tennis Federation issued a statement emphasizing their commitment to monitoring the situation closely. “The health condition of our national athlete Altug Celikbilek, who fell ill during a match at the M15 Monastir tournament held in Tunisia, is being closely monitored by our Federation and the Tunisian Embassy. All necessary support is being provided to our athlete and his family. We wish our athlete a speedy recovery.”
Ipek Senoglu, a former Turkish WTA player, also provided updates on social media. “This morning, the doctor examined Altug and gave him good news. His mother is with him now, and they are speaking. More tests and check-ups are scheduled today, and we are hopeful for positive updates,” Senoglu wrote on X.
Signs of Improvement
Encouraging news emerged on Monday when Senoglu reported signs of improvement in Celikbilek’s condition. Despite the critical nature of a brain hemorrhage, these developments have offered some relief to the tennis community. The Turkish journey has been one of resilience and promise.
Earlier in his career, he achieved a career-high ATP ranking of No. 140 and earned three Challenger titles, including a memorable victory in Pozoblanco, Spain. He also made an impressive ATP debut in 2019, defeating former World No. 10 Ernests Gulbis. Though he competed primarily on the ITF circuit in recent years, his talent and determination made him a respected figure in Turkish tennis.
The 28-year-old latest tournament saw him secure three straight-set victories before the unfortunate incident in Monastir. His semifinal appearance was another testament to his grit and skill, making the sudden collapse even more heartbreaking for his fans and supporters. The tennis world is rallying around Celikbilek, offering prayers and support for his recovery.
