Roger Federer Posts Heartwarming Letter To Rafael Nadal

Rafael Nadal will be playing his last professional tournament at the Davis Cup. Roger Federer’s admiration for Nadal, and vice-versa, is known to everyone. On the morning of the first day (November 19) of the Davis Cup, the 20-time Grand Slam champion posted a beautiful letter for Nadal on Instagram.

This letter hits hard for everyone who has followed tennis for the last twenty years. Nadal and Federer’s respect and admiration for each other despite being the biggest rivals are pathbreaking. Federer says, “You challenged me in ways no one else could. You made me reimagine my game—even going as far as to change the size of my racquet head, hoping for any edge.” As always, these are classy words from the Swiss.

“Rafa, You made me enjoy the game even more”: Federer

This statement from Federer sums up this legendary rivalry. They always pushed each other to become a better player. Saying something like this is not easy and shows how honest Federer is. What a beautiful gesture from “the Maestro.” Federer has a way with words and couldn’t have come up with a better tribute to his friend and rival. Federer mentions some of the historic moments in their rivalry- the match on half-grass, half-clay, an exhibition, which was titled the Battle of Surfaces and was played in Mallorca on May 2, 2007. He also mentions their record-breaking exhibition match in Cape Town, South Africa, dubbed Match in Africa 6, which featured Bill Gates and Trevor Noah.

The eight-time Wimbledon champion signed off the letter by saying: “I want you to know that your old friend is always cheering for you, and will be cheering just as loud for everything you do next. Best always, your fan.” It’s beautiful to see that one of the greatest rivalries in all sports is filled with so much love and respect. These two have set an example for upcoming generations that rivalries can coexist with respect. Their ability to enjoy one another’s accomplishments without jealousy displays great sportsmanship.
