The Slam season might be over after the US Open, but the WTA Tour never stops and another exciting tournament is expected this week in San Diego with Ons Jabeur heading a pretty strong field. Day 1 will see a lot of American players in action, as well as some high ranked players like the World #25 Karolina Pliskova. It should be a day filled with tight and exciting matches. We also predict the rest of the day’s matches in a separate article.
WTA San Diego Day 1 Predictions
Jasmine Paolini vs Emma Navarro
Head-to-head: first meeting
Navarro might have the home advantage here, but Paolini is the far more experiend player and should have a very clear edge here. Navarro certainly has more than enough ability to make this a drawn out match that stays tight until the end. It’s fair to consider Paolini the favorite here, but she will almost certainly have to fight very hard to get it done against a very capable and motivated opponent.
Predictions: Paolini n 3
Magdalena Frech vs Camila Osorio
Head-to-head: Osorio 1-0 Frech
It was a very tight match (even if it finished in two sets) when the fair faced in Monterrey last year and it should be a similar story here. Osorio won last year and all things considered it’s far to say she has the slightest of edges in this one, even if Frech is course completely capable of usetting Frech if she plays somewhat close to her best level.
Prediction: Osorio in 3

Anhelina Kalinina vs Karolina Pliskova
Head-to-head: Pliskova 2-0 Kalinina
The players are separated by only two ranking spots and have been playing at similar levels in recent time too. Nevertheless, Pliskova is clearly the player with the better weapons and overall record and is rightly considered the favorite here. If she plays somewhat close to her best tenns, should be able to overpower Kalinina but that’s easier said than done giver her recent forms.
Prediction: Pliskova in 3
