WTA San Diego Open Day 3 Predictions Including Jessica Pegula vs Coco Vandeweghe

Jessica Pegula San Diego

Rain impacted play on Tuesday in San Diego, meaning we have just three new matches to cover here. Nevertheless, they promise to be exciting affairs featuring some big names in the women’s game. Chief among them is home favourite and #4 seed Jessica Pegula. She’s joined by the likes of Karolina Pliskova and Danielle Collins, with each trying to take one step closer to the title here. With that in mind, let’s get stuck into our WTA San Diego Open Day 3 predictions

WTA San Diego Open Day 3 Predictions

Donna Vekic vs Karolina Pliskova

Head-to-head: 6 – 1 Pliskova

Pliskova is the clear favourite here. Donna Vekic thumped Maria Sakkari in the last round but that was more about the Greek did wrong than what Vekic did right. Equally, these two meet three times last year and Pliskova won all three encounters, This isn’t a goop matchup for Vekic and she will do well to make this a close encounter. She’s failed to beat Pliskova in their last six meetings and I fail to see a change in that narrative here given how good the big-serving Czech looked in her last encounter.

Danielle Collins vs Martina Trevisan

Head-to-head: First meeting

Danielle Collins is the clear favourite here. She won two titles last year and has been won of the better players on the women’s tour over the last twelve months. She would likely be in the top ten if not for injuries and she was superb in dismissing Caroline Garcia in the last round. Martina Trevisan is a talented player, but struggles away from the clay. That doesn’t bode well here against the ultra aggressive ball striking of Collins. Expect this one to be over pretty quickly.

Jessica Pegula vs Coco Vandeweghe

Head-to-head: 1 – 1

Coco Vandeweghe did well to beat fellow American Sofia Kenin in the last round here in San Diego. However, I suspect her run doesn’t go any deeper than that as she now faces Pegula. The world #6 has been one of the most consistent performers in the world over the last year or so and is one of the very best in the women’s game. Vandeweghe managed to upset her compatriot in Charleston earlier this year but I wouldn’t expect a recurrence of that narrative here. Pegula is a lock for the WTA Finals already and has nothing to lose here which should allow her to play freely. That doesn’t bode well for the rest of the draw and it certainly doesn’t bode well for Vandeweghe.

Prediction: Pegula in 2
