WTA Cluj Day 2 Predictions Including Elena-Gabriela Ruse vs Harmony Tan

Elena-Gabriela Ruse in action ahead of the WTA Cluj Open.

It should be an exciting second day at the WTA Cluj Open in Romania with eight matches on the slate. As always, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every match on the schedule, including Eugenie Bouchard vs Anhelina Kalinina. But who will reach the second round?

WTA Cluj Day 2 Predictions

Ann Li vs Anastasia Potapova

Head-to-head: first meeting

Anastasia Potapova has a very high ceiling, but she often shoots herself in the foot by having no plan B and spraying errors all over the place. The indoor conditions should help her gain the edge off the ground against Ann Li. Then it becomes a matter of executing her game right to take advantage of it. This one should be on her racket more than on the American’s.

Prediction: Potapova in 2

Oceane Dodin vs Harriet Dart

Head-to-head: Dodin 1-0 Dart

Interestingly, Oceane Dodin retired in the final qualifying round due to illness, but finds herself in the main draw with a lucky loser spot. She’s usually a strong player in indoor conditions thanks to her powerful serve and the Frenchwoman also beat Harriet Dart in Doha at the beginning of the season. The fitness concerns are there though and she might not be able to compete at her best level. If she’s 100%, she’s the favorite to win this one.

Prediction: Dodin in 2

Jaqueline Cristian vs Wang Xiyu

Head-to-head: first meeting

Jaqueline Cristian had a great run in Cluj last year, but this season hasn’t gone as planned for her due to injuries. She’s recently won an 80K ITF in Le-Neuborg though and is slowly getting back on the right track. Xiyu Wang’s talent exploded during the US Open Series and while she’s yet to grab a win in the indoor season, she almost took out Anett Kontaveit in Tallinn. This could be one of the low-key matches of the round. Wang’s in the better rhythm of late, but Cristian is always tough to play against at home.

Prediction: Wang in 3

Elena-Gabriela Ruse vs Harmony Tan

Head-to-head: first meeting

Elena-Gabriela Ruse hasn’t maintained her phenomenal start to the season and has only been picking up wins only sporadically in recent weeks. The Romanian will be playing at home though and has a more natural game for indoor conditions, but in this form, Harmony Tan’s variety of spins could definitely trip her up. The Frenchwoman is in the main draw as a lucky loser and has a good chance to progress a round, but she’s also been struggling with her fitness of late. It could really go both ways.

Prediction: Ruse in 3
