Just two main draw singles matches are on Monday’s schedule at the 2022 ATP Moselle Open in Metz, France. The qualifying competition will also be wrapped up with four players gaining entry this way. Who do you think will win?
ATP Metz Day 1 Predictions
Quentin Halys vs Evan Furness
Head-to-head: First meeting
This is a final round of qualifying match. While Quentin Halys has struggled on the ATP Tour this summer, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Frenchman grabbed a couple of decent runs in the indoor season. That’s where he was most dominant in Challengers early in 2022. Even Furness is a solid defender, but on a quick surface the weaponry of Halys should be way too much.
Prediction: Halys in 2
Stan Wawrinka vs Zsombor Piros
Head-to-head: First meeting
This is a final round of qualifying match. Stan Wawrinka beat Laslo Djere on Sunday and now only Zsombor Piros stands between him and the main draw. The Hungarian has beefed up his attacking game in the past year or so and it works best with the extra pop from the surface like he’ll get here. The problem is in this matchup he might not even be the fitter player than the 37-year-old Swiss. Piros has been repeatedly held back by injury issues, not only of late, but throughout his career. He should also be quite vulnerable to getting overwhelmed by Wawrinka’s power as he doesn’t usually face players with this sort of attacking caliber.
Prediction: Wawrinka in 3
Aslan Karatsev vs Lorenzo Sonego
Head-to-head: Karatsev 3-0
Aslan Karatsev has already defeated Lorenzo Sonego twice this year, but all their matches ended in three sets. With how much the Russian has struggled all year, this a great opportunity for Sonego to get the first win over his opponent. However, the Italian also hasn’t been in great shape. He’s generally the stronger indoor hard court player and he’s got the chance to prove it.
Prediction: Sonego in 3
Hugo Gaston vs Sebastian Korda
Head-to-head: Korda 1-0
Hugo Gaston usually loves playing in front of the home crowd, getting his best-ever results at Roland Garros and Bercy. He also had a very solid run at the Rennes Challenger last week, losing to Dominic Thiem in the semifinals. Sebastian Korda can definitely overpower him, but it’s not like the American has been in superb form of late. Gaston should be a very live underdog in this one.
Prediction: Gaston in 3
