Day 3 at the ATP event in Newport will be packed full of action, including former #1 and 2-time Wimbledon champions Andy Murray, as he continues his quest to try and climb up the ATP rankings. We also have predictions for matches featuring Jiri Vesely and Jason Kubler.
ATP Newport Day 3 Predictions
Andy Murray vs Max Purcell
Head-to-head: first meeting
Andy Murray had a quite disappointing loss at Wimbledon against John Isner but he put that behind him quickly and dismantled Sam Querrey here in the first round. This second round should in theory be very winnable as well for the Scot as he tries to get into a seeding position for the US Open. It might even be an opportunity to finally win a title after such a long drought.
Prediction: Murray in 2
Alexander Bublik vs Jack Sock
Head-to-head: Sock 1-0 Bublik
Their one previous meeting was at the US Open last year and Sock came through in a tough 5-setter. Another tight encounter is expected here: Bublik is one of the most inconsistent and unpredictable players on tour; Sock showed some good form at Wimbledon but it remains to be seen whether it’s more than a flash in the pan. It’s a match that could genuinely go either way.
Prediction: Sock in 3
Quentin Halys vs James Duckworth
Head-to-head: Duckworth 3-0 Halys
This is also expected to be an extremely tight encounter; both players are close to the same overall level and both have got some decent results on grass so far this season considering their ranking. Duckworth won all three previous matches between the pair, but Halys might just have the slight edge this time around.
Prediction: Halys in 3
Mitchell Krueger vs Maxime Cressy
Head-to-head: first meeting
Cressy has had an extraordinary grass season all things considered, but Wimbledon really showed his issues with consistency: after an incredible serving performance saw him upset Felix Auger-Aliassime, he lost in disappointing fashion against Jack Sock in the following round. Krueger will be extremely confident after the massive upset against grass season sensation Tim Van Rijthoven, but Cressy should still have too much for him.
Prediction: Cressy in 2
