Action from the Teotihuacán group comes to a conclusion on Sunday at the WTA Finals in Guadalajara. Anett Kontaveit has already confirmed her spot in the semi-finals, that leaves one more place to be filled by either Barbora Krejcikova, Karolina Pliskova or Garbine Muguruza. Krejcikova has lost her first two matches of the tournament, but still has a chance to advance if she can defeat Pliskova in straight sets and then hope that Kontaveit beats Muguruza in the second match of the day.
If Pliskova beats Krejcikova then she will have a strong chance of qualifying for the semi-finals, but her progression will still be at the mercy of various scenarios depending on the result of the final match of the day. Who wins the crucial all-Czech battle?
WTA Finals Day 5 Predictions
Barbora Krejcikova vs Karolina Pliskova
Head-to-head: Pliskova 2-0 Krejcikova
Krejcikova is on a five-match losing streak. The Czech arrived in Guadalajara off a limited preparation having flown in from Prague (where she was competing in the Billie Jean King Cup Finals) a few days before the tournament started. The world number three succumbed to Anett Kontaveit in straight sets in her opening match in Guadalajara before losing to Garbine Muguruza in three sets despite winning the first set. Krejcikova showed better signs in her loss to Muguruza, she wasn’t far off, but still understandably not at her best after a long season.
Pliskova made a winning start to her Guadalajara campaign. Competing in her fifth consecutive WTA Finals campaign, Pliskova outlasted Garbine Muguruza in a final set tiebreaker but wasn’t so successful in her second match where she lost to a red-hot Anett Kontaveit in straight sets. It has been hard to get a read on exactly how well Pliskova is playing at the moment, this matchup with Krejcikova will give us a better idea.
Pliskova has won both of the previous meetings between the pair. Their most recent clash was at Roland Garros in 2018, Pliskova won 7-6 6-4. Krejcikova has clearly improved her level significantly since that clash and will be better equipped to deal with the Pliskova game on this occasion.
This is a tough match to predict, a unique situation where both players have already lost a match this tournament but still have a chance to advance to the next stage. Krejcikova has the versatility to make life tough for Pliskova, usually I would take Krejcikova in this match-up and I will stick with here. However, it’s a hesitant prediction given Krejcikova’s subpar performances to start the tournament. There are still signs of life for Krejcikova, with nothing to lose and potentially in her last singles match of the season she could prove a troublesome opponent for a vulnerable Pliskova.
Prediction: Krejcikova in 3
