Day 4 at the ATP Masters 1000 in Cincinnati will (hopefully, if the rain permits it) see the completion of the second round, with the likes of former champion Andy Murray and finalist John Isner taking to the court. As always, we predict all of the matches, split between four articles. The other three feature Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Sebastian Korda, Karen Khachanov vs Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Daniil Medvedev vs Mackenzie McDonald.
ATP Cincinnati Day 4 Predictions
John Isner vs Jannik Sinner
Head-to-head: first meeting
Isner looked to be struggling physically against Daniil Medvedev in Canada, but he showed no signs of it as he fired 26 aces en route to defeating Cameron Norrie in the first round. Sinner is evidently talented, but at this stage of his career he’s not used to facing a serve like Isner’s and is unlikely to have the concentration necessary to come through there if the American is serving at his best.
Prediction: Isner in 2
Lorenzo Sonego vs Tommy Paul
Head-to-head: Paul 2-0 Sonego
This should be a very tight match, like when they met in Rotterdam earlier this year. Paul played a very physically demanding match against Garin in the first round and that might be enough to give Sonego a chance for his first victory in this matchup.
Prediction: Sonego in 3
Hubert Hurkacz vs Andy Murray
Head-to-head: first meeting
Hurkacz has had an extremely inconsistent season. By winning Miami, he achieved more than anyone ever expected of him, but he followed that up with six consecutive losses… until Wimbledon, where he reached the semifinals. Then at the Olympics he was upset by Liam Brody, before coming within inches of upsetting eventual champion Medvedev last week in Canada. You never know what to expect with Hurcacz. The fact he played well last week doesn’t mean he will do it again in Cincinnati. When it comes to Murray, it’s clear his best days are behind him, but he still has the ability to be dangerous on his day and Hukacz has certainly lost to worse players this year. Murray might well have a bit of a run here.
Prediction: Murray in 3
