Wimbledon Best of 5 Day 6 Including Djokovic vs. Gulbis

On day 6 at Wimbledon veterans Roger Federer, Tomas Berdych, Gael Monfils, and Novak Djokovic seek to reach week 2, along with young gun Alexander Zverev. Our panel of Steen Kirby, Yesh Ginsburg, and Brett Margolies are on hand to offer their previews with predictions.

(10)Alexander Zverev vs. (Q)Sebastian Ofner

Steen: The previously unknown Austrian young gun has scored six wins at Wimbledon, Zverev has yet to drop a set though, and with his talent on grass he should ease past this match and reach the second week. Zverev in 3

Yesh: Much as I like Ofner, his second round win was far more about Jack Sock’s play than his own. Zverev should win this match easily. Zverev in 3

Brett: Sebastian Ofner has been the fairytale story so far this week at Wimbledon. He’ll face his toughest opponent yet in Alexander Zverev. Zverev hasn’t dropped a set yet in the first two rounds and I expect that to continue on Saturday. Zverev in 3

(3)Roger Federer vs. (27)Mischa Zverev

Steen: Federer has never lost to Zverev and beat him twice this season. Mischa is dangerous on the serve and volley, but Federer is simply too sharp right now to lose. Federer in 3

Yesh: The older Zverev brother put his name back on the map when he took out Andy Murray at the Australian Open this year. He has the right style to upset Federer, but I think that the Swiss is just too good right now. Federer in 4

Brett: Like most players do, Mischa Zverev has struggled with Roger Federer to say the least. In their four previous meetings he hasn’t won a set including a 6-0 6-0 loss on the grass in Halle in 2013. I don’t think anything will change on Saturday. Federer in 3

(11)Tomas Berdych vs. David Ferrer

Steen: Ferrer has historically competed well against Berdych, and deserves credit for making the third round (though in round 2 it came via an early retirement), but Berdych’s power on grass should be enough to get him through, as long as he keeps his nerve. Berdych in 4

Yesh: This has been a nice tournament for Ferrer, but Berdych just looks beastly on the grass. I can’t see Ferrer have any real success breaking serve. Berdych in 3

Brett: Ferrer, and Berdych will be meeting for 15th time in their career on Saturday (first meeting on grass) with the H2H at 7-7. It’s an interesting contrast in styles with Berdych’s big hitting and Ferrer’s ability to defend. Ferrer will be well rested after only having to play three games on Thursday, but Berdych’s power game will be too much to handle for the Spaniard. Berdych in 4

(15)Gael Monfils vs. Adrian Mannarino

Steen: Monfils has beaten his countryman at Wimbledon before, having not dropped a set and in good form on grass, it’s comfortable to assume he’ll whip past Mannarino, another player who deserves credit for making the third round. Monfils in 3

Yesh: For all his potential power, Monfils has had very little success at Wimbledon. That will change, as a fortunate draw will lead to a second week appearance. Monfils in 3

Brett: Gael Monfils is quietly playing good tennis, and looks like he may be headed to the fourth round of Wimbledon for the first time in his career. Mannarino got his revenge on Sugita in his five set win but can’t see him doing anything to hurt Monfils the way he’s playing at the moment. Monfils in 3

(2)Novak Djokovic vs. Ernests Gulbis

Steen: I’m as surprised to see Gulbis in the third round, without dropping a set no less, as anyone, that said Djokovic has to be a clear favorite here. He’s better on the surface and more consistent, even though Gulbis can rise to the occasion from time to time. Djokovic in 4

Yesh: Gulbis came out of nowhere to suddenly no longer be entirely irrelevant. An upset here would not shock me at all, especially with Djokovic’s recent inconsistency, but it’s just too unlikely to actually predict. Djokovic in 4.

Brett: Most people were hoping to see Djokovic-Del Potro at this stage but #576 ranked Ernests Gulbis has something to say about that. His aggressive, and fearless game has worked so far on the grass but Djokovic seems to be finding his form after winning Eastbourne and now rolling through the first two rounds. I think Gulbis will keep it close but won’t be enough to get the win. Djokovic in 4
